We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Nikki Thomas. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Nikki below.
Alright, Nikki thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you tell us the backstory behind how you came up with the idea?
Sure. A friend of mine told me years ago that I needed to start reading the Bible. She told me that it would be important to me achieving what God has for me to achieve. I didn’t listen right away because, unless the Lord opens your eyes to it, the Bible can be intimidating. It can seem boring or difficult to understand, and that’s where I was with it. I was finally led to read it at some point and my eyes were opened. Many of the stories were action packed and full of drama like reality tv shows which were big at the time. I remember telling my sister, hey some of these Bible stories are like Love and Hip Hop type drama. So, I would give my sister quick recaps of the stories as I read them and I would tell the stories in the way the she and I speak to each other. Sometimes it would sound like gossip and my sister would be on the edge of her seat. One day she told me that the way I told the stories really helped her learn and understand them. That’s when the light bulb went off that I could offer my perspective to others in that same way and encourage more people to read the Bible for themselves.
Nikki, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a writer and a creative at heart. I always say that I enjoy serving dreamers, do’ers, and entrepreneurs through writing, branding, and other creative efforts. Right now, my Bible study podcast, That’s What She Read, is my focus and I consider it my spiritual assignment to invite people to receive the Word of God in a way that may be easier to digest. I also create planners that challenge myself and others to go for big goals and crush them!
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal is just to show people that reading the Bible does not have to be a pretentious or dreadful experience. It can be really amazing and life-changing if you allow it to be. I believe that a person’s purpose is connected to service and this podcast is part of my assignment to serve. My hope is that those that thirst for the Word of God find this show to be an easy place to get a sip and hopefully it leads them to living water.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I am still very much in the early stages of building a social following. My advice is to focus on what’s important and the rest will come. Right now my focus is on serving with consistency and building on the quality of the show. I do have a small but consistent listenership and I owe them that much. As the Bible says, do not despise small beginnings. I’m proud of where I am and I’m believing that the show will reach those who stand to benefit from it. I praise God for that.
