Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nikki Shockley. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Nikki, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about how you went about setting up your own practice and if you have any advice for professionals who might be considering starting their own?
Last year, I made the bold decision to establish my own private practice, focusing on providing virtual care with the added benefit of an annual home visit. I recognized that virtual visits allow me to extend my reach and truly meet patients where they are, offering convenience and accessibility that traditional models often lack.
This was an ambitious step, as no one in my area had embraced this innovative approach to healthcare. Navigating the complexities of the healthcare system is rarely straightforward or fast, but I was determined to create a practice that prioritized patient-centered care and adaptability.
For those considering starting their own practice, my advice is to approach it with patience and careful planning. Build your practice gradually, and consider maintaining an additional source of income during the early stages. While the journey may be slow, the rewards of creating a practice that aligns with your vision and values are truly worth it.
Nikki, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have been passionate about healthcare since I began my journey at 17. Starting in nursing homes as a nursing assistant and progressing to become a Nurse Practitioner, I’ve gained invaluable experience in every role along the way. Each step has shaped the provider I am today, equipping me with the skills and knowledge to offer compassionate, patient-centered care.
In my practice, I prioritize building relationships with patients, often starting with a call to determine if I’m the right fit for their needs and whether the virtual care model works for them. While virtual healthcare can be unfamiliar for some, it offers unparalleled convenience and flexibility for those willing to embrace it.
What sets me apart from other providers in the current healthcare model is the ability to tailor my time to each patient’s unique needs. While visits are often 20–30 minutes, I have the flexibility to extend our time together when needed, ensuring patients feel fully heard and supported.
I am incredibly proud of the progress I’ve made in my private practice and grateful for the opportunity to offer personalized care that truly meets people where they are.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I have been a Nurse Practitioner for eight years, and caring for people has always been my passion. There’s nothing more rewarding to me than witnessing someone’s health improve and knowing I’ve played a role in that transformation.
However, as healthcare models have shifted toward seeing more patients in less time, I found myself struggling with the limited opportunities to connect meaningfully with my patients. Many expressed feeling unheard, and I knew this model wasn’t serving them—or me—effectively.
That realization inspired me to open my own practice, where I could create the time and space to truly meet my patients’ needs. By prioritizing personalized care, I can provide the attention and support each person deserves on their health journey.
In 2025, my focus is shifting to concentrate on the needs of peri-menopausal women—a significant and often underserved population. To support these women, I am offering a comprehensive four-month plan designed to help them feel their best, reconnect with their sense of self, and embrace their new identity for the next chapter of life. This program is all about empowering women to thrive during this transformative stage.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Living in a small community has been a blessing, as my reputation often precedes me. Many people recognize me from previous opportunities before I began working for myself, and I’m deeply grateful for the trust and connections I’ve built over the years.
I take great pride in maintaining an authentic and honest reputation. Whether you see me in the exam room or connect with me in a virtual chat, you’ll always get the same genuine person. My goal is to create a space where patients feel valued, understood, and supported throughout their health journey.
Social media has become an important platform for me to connect with others. Through a side business, I’ve built a strong following and discovered that being visible, authentic, and relatable is what truly resonates with people. By sharing openly and staying genuine, I’m able to foster trust and create meaningful connections that extend beyond the exam room.
