We were lucky to catch up with Nikki Lawrie recently and have shared our conversation below.
Nikki, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
I left a very secure leadership position at a well-respected non-profit, where I had worked for nearly a decade to start my own business. I made the jump with only a few thousand dollars saved. I was also a single mother at the time.
I jumped not really knowing what I was doing and had to figure every aspect out very much in the moment. It was challenging and scary and completely emotionally draining, but nearly 4 years, and a few pivots later, I’m still here running my business and in the process of launching a non-profit.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am a Multi-Certified Functional Medicine and Integrative Nutrition Practitioner, Environmental Health (toxins) Expert, and Consumer Health and Sustainability Advocate and Educator.
As a Consumer Health and Sustainability Advocate, I inform and guide decision-making by lawmakers, community leaders, and key stakeholders on critical issues that impact consumer health and the health of our planet at both the national and state levels. My responsibilities involve protecting and promoting the welfare and rights of consumers through product testing, grassroots movements, and advocating for improved laws relating to the regulation and sale of goods that may be harmful to our health and the environment.
Furthermore, as a Consumer Health and Sustainability Educator, I develop programs, content, and materials to educate individuals and groups on healthy and unhealthy behaviors, encouraging conscious consumption, which involves avoiding potentially harmful ingredients or materials in products.
To further support this cause, I founded Consciouslie, which offers a non-toxic, and eco-friendly affiliate marketplace, a private label product line, and a highly curated food, beauty, and lifestyle content. My goal is to empower people to prioritize their health and wellness through conscious consumption, ultimately supporting the health of both people and the planet.
Along with my advocacy work and running the day-to-day operations of Consciouslie, I host the Living Consciouslie Podcast, and run A Little Extra Love, a small non-profit that facilitates, funds, supports and inspires acts of kindness, both big and small, to contribute to a happier, healthier, more just planet. I’m also a proud mother to a beautiful daughter and a wife to a wonderful USAF Pilot.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I first launched my business I started out as a graphic designer/marketing consultant. I had a bunch of clients in the senior care industry and was doing pretty well financially, but really wasn’t happy with the work. I knew I wanted to do something that aligned better with my passions and interests.
After about a year I decided to go back to school and completed several certifications in the health and science industries. I became a Multi-Certified Functional Medicine and Integrative Nutrition Practitioner, Environmental Health (toxins) Expert, and Consumer Health and Sustainability Advocate and Educator.
I then built a practice helping people heal their bodies and do good for the planet by shifting their lifestyle behaviors and habits to healthier ones. It’s been a lot of work and emotionally challenging making the pivot, but well worth it. I’m happy with the work I do now, can see the impact I’m making, and am excited about the future.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
The biggest thing I had to unlearn is my perceived value. Learning to price my services at a rate that would make me financially stable, and not feeling bad about it. Learning to offer different types of services that don’t eat up my precious time, and understanding that I can still serve many people through different services/price points while still making a good living.
