We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nikki Konnagan a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Nikki, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s talk about social media – do you manage your own or do you have someone or a company that handles it for you? Why did you make the choice you did?
I manage my own social media. I choose to manage my own social media because I truly enjoy creating my own content. My goal is to be myself and deliver informative yet entertaining content to my audience. I would say if you are thinking about starting your own social media business, always be yourself. Don’t be afraid to let people know a personal side of you. Be present with your audience and engage with them as much as possible. It takes a lot of work when you first get started but the reward will be worth it in the end.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a wife and a mother of 2 girls. I work at a local Children’s Hospital as a Child Life Specialist for the last 17 years. I worked full time but a couple of years ago I had to cut my hours due to my youngest daughter’s medical needs. She was diagnosed with mild cerebral palsy at the age of 4 with other mental health diagnosis. This called for many doctors appointments and therapy sessions.
I now work per request at my place of employment. I love my career but my daughter is my priority. I knew I had to make big changes in my spending habits. I was getting Amazon packages everyday😂. I always enjoyed finding deals and sharing how cheap I found an item with my friends. But things were different now, I needed to do something to hold myself accountable on my spending habits. I decided to learn how to coupon and post deals that I found to share with others. I started my social media page just thinking maybe I can help others save money during inflation and difficult times. Little did I know that people would really be interested in my family and saving money!
My family is a huge part of my social media page. My husband literally is my biggest fan. He supports our family financially, spiritually and emotionally. I couldn’t have asked for a better husband. We have all learned to clearance shop and use coupons! It is definitely a family affair! My proudest moment was when my husband came home and was excited with all the money he saved at the store! He loves savings as much as I do.
I am so appreciative of all my followers! I have been doing this for six months and I have gained so much support! I really don’t look at my audience as followers. I look at them as my support system, my cheerleaders and team! I love our little coupon community because we all support each other and have the same goal in mind, helping others get through life during financially tough times.
How did you build your audience on social media?
If you want to build your audience you have to be present. It is important to network and meet others in your niche. When I first started I made sure to compliment other’s in my niche by tagging them in stories, reposting a deal they found or interacting through DM. It is important to be yourself when interacting with others and genuinely acknowledge their great qualities. For a month I observed qualities of other couponers and would feature one person a month. In my stories I discussed their story and then shared what I appreciated about them as a couponer/deal seeker. It is not about just posting your content it is about building a relationship with those in your niche.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of creating this social media page is helping others. I have had so many people tell me how much they appreciate when I share deals. This economy is tough to live in. Some people really have it hard. It is very rewarding to teach others how to save money and shop smart!
