We recently connected with Nikki Golly and have shared our conversation below.
Nikki, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you get your first job in the field that you practice in today?
When I got my first job in the health industry, it could not have been a better time in my life. I was in a new state, living with my best friend, and away from home for the first time. I was lost, working as a server at a nearby restaurant, and going to college for general studies. I was told by my parents that I had to go to college but had no idea what I wanted to do with my life.
It all started one day when I walked to the vitamin store from my restaurant job to get a Naked Juice, I wanted to drink something healthy between shifts. I was my normal, upbeat and cheery self when the manager asked me a few questions, commented on my great attitude, and asked if I wanted a job. That was the start of my 7-year career with Hi-Health vitamin stores, where I learned so much about what it meant to truly help people, give them solutions to heal their bodies, and gave me a purpose for the rest of my life.
I quickly learned about as many products as I could, was so inspired to learn about new ailments that people came in with, and thrived on researching and giving people advice that made a huge difference in their health. I knew that this was a calling for me because it brought me such joy to help others feel better. This job at the vitamin store inspired me to start learning with a passion in college so I could help people even more with deeper issues than what vitamins could help with. I have been helping people in the field ever since and loving every minute of it.
Nikki, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am Nikki Golly, health coach and supplementologist at Fuel Your Body, I have been helping people get to the root cause of their health issues and heal their bodies with nutrition and supplements for about 16 years now. My main focus is getting to the root cause of digestion issues like constipation, diarrhea, hives, and throwing up.
I am a little different than most nutritionists because I have a degree in nutrition as well as use supplements as stepping stones to get my clients feeling better faster. I am a supplementologist, a person who studies supplements because, unlike the pharmaceutical industry, supplements are not regulated and there is no oversight of what actually goes into the products. I study brands, types, and potencies so my clients are actually getting what they are buying and not something fake or harmful.
I love learning new things that can help myself and my clients heal faster and live our best lives. I feel that it is important to focus on and use knowledge about food that has been around for many years and has been tested thoroughly, not the latest fad diets.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
One of the biggest pivots in my career was when I started my own nutrition business after working for Hi-Health vitamin stores for 7 years. I knew my time was done at the vitamin store when I was managing my 4th store in a year. I had significantly increased the overall sales, customer count, and employee satisfaction in all the previous stores, when they asked me to move again with little to no pay increase. I said “thank you but no thank you” and the district manager had the audacity to say, “I wish you were on board with this decision but it’s going to happen anyway”. HAHAHA wait what!? I felt like just a pawn in their game and they didn’t care about me at all after all I had done for them.
That was when I decided to leave and venture out on my own, it was the biggest and scariest decision of my life but also the most rewarding. I thought that if I could do so much good for them if I put that same love and intensity into my own venture I was bound to be successful. I was right! That was the day I started Fuel Your Body with Nikki Golly.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
The most helpful thing I have learned outside my nutrition studies is perseverance. The perseverance of keeping going when things got rough or when things didn’t work out as I had wanted or expected. I think one of the best things that any small business owner can do when running their own business is to keep choosing to move forward and know that things will work out the way that they are supposed to. This persevering mentality has been helpful in the nutrition field because things are always changing, there are always new fads and trends that people want to jump on that are touted to be the next quick fix. I have found that rarely are the quick fixes all they are hyped up to be and that is where good education and persistence in helping people truly heal comes in. I use time-tested methods that are going to stand the test of time and help someone who is 2 as well as someone who is 92.
