We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Nikki Devould . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Nikki below.
Nikki, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
I took a risk with D.I.A.L. Fitness! I was told that I was pre-diabetic, and needed to back off the sugar and get more active. I already have high blood pressure, and getting that diagnosis really scared me. I tried the gym, but it’s just not my thing, so I started occasionally doing Zumba, but the days didn’t fit my schedule. My husband said I needed to do something I like, and after thinking I came up with line dancing…but I couldn’t find a place that did that without paying for a full gym membership. I ended up speaking to the owner of Smoothies and Fitness about needing line dancing classes, and well, now I teach line dancing!! I took a chance for my health and my family, and it’s going GREAT! I have regular students, great reviews, and I’m learning more about helping others get fit as well. I’m not a fitness expert by any means, but I can get that heart rate up with some line dancing cardio!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers?
I am a wife, mother of 5, pre-nursing student, model, and line dancing instructor. The acronym D.I.A.L. stands for Dancing in a Line, and I started it to get moving in a fun, energetic way that didn’t require a treadmill or elliptical. I offer classes that teach a diverse range of line dances (from hip hop to country) where there is no judgment- feel free to dance like nobody’s watching. My favorite thing is when new students come to class, and they are shocked by how much they sweat and need water breaks!! It makes me feel like i’ve helped their fitness goal(s) in some way. I also offer high heeled line dancing that works the lower extremities and muscles in a different way than the standard classes (students can attend without heels)…it has been a BLAST!! For potential students, A-K-A Dialers, I would say this is where you start, step one. Get Dialed In!
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
My first month of classes took off like a rocket! I was so excited that people actually wanted to line dance with me, but that next month I only had 1-3 people in every other class. It was very disheartening, but I came to class every week ready to dance. Finally, I asked my daughters, who are my co-instructors, to take some tutorial type videos of me doing the dances for social media and my class sizes picked up again. Even though there are still random days with low to no attendance, I don’t get as discouraged anymore. I make new videos, post them, and keep it moving.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
I’m still learning, but I would say consistency. I am consistent with having the classes. I am consistent with posting videos- sometimes with a full class and sometimes by myself. I am consistent with marketing and growing my brand. Most of all, I am consistent with learning more; learning more about fitness, more about the benefits of cardio, and more about helping others start their healthy journeys 1 hour at a time.
