We recently connected with Nikki Bass and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Nikki thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start big picture – what are some of biggest trends you are seeing in your industry?
In the culture of COVID-19, the industry is changing. People want to be able to work from the safety of their homes, they’re realizing the value of a dollar has changed, and they want to be recognized for their work. Within the corporate world there has been a shift also known as the great resignation What this means is that people are tired they want to do jobs where they feel valued where they feel properly paid and where they are matching their skills to their job. So what this means is we are starting to see an influx of career changers of industry variations. We are starting to see our teachers switch to tech, we are starting to see a lot of our traditional entry-level jobs require more experience. We are starting to see people ask for the money that they deserve and walking away if they aren’t getting their offer. We are seeing people refuse to work jobs that are making them go back in person. All of these things make up the great resignation in corporate America.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a career coach and résumé writer who specializes in working with people in the tech industry, changing careers, and the educational field. I chose the business name Corporate Melanin Millennial LLC because black faces and millennial voices are often under represented in corporate America and I want to change that. I work with people of all ages in all races the large majority of my clients are black millennial women and that’s OK. I help people negotiate their worth, create resumes that generate a return, as well as show people that those skills they have are transferable. So many people think oh I want to transition into tech I have to start an entry-level role but have 10 years of experience somewhere else you don’t have to start entry level and that’s where Corporate Melanin Millennial, LLC from I want to make sure everyone’s in a career that they feel passionate about.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source of new clients for me has been referrals. I really despise promoting on social media I’m just not a fan of bombarding people with advertisements however my work speaks for itself. 78% of my clients are directly from someone else telling them about me. Having a positive brand recognition and being able to deliver results consistently will give you new clients.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
It was really important for me to unlearn setting low expectations and what this means is I found myself setting low prices because I didn’t think people would pay high prices even though I generated high-quality work. So the first time I doubled the cost of career coaching from my business I didn’t think anybody would sign up this was very early in my business career and I have a psycho who is going to pay $600 to get coaching for me and I sold out in 24 hours.
