We caught up with the brilliant and insightful NIKITA WALLACE a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, NIKITA thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start big picture – what are some of biggest trends you are seeing in your industry?
One of the biggest trends that I’m absolutely loving is denim-on-denim, head to toe look. Actually, the denim-on-denim look should not be categorized as a “trend”. For the Srping/Summer as well as into the Fall/Winter. Always have been a fan of the look. It’s such a very classic clean and polished look. This look could be dressed up with an amazing jewelry piece, with some fabulous heels/platforms and handbag. It’s a great time to enjoy and pay homage to the 70’s.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am the Founder and Executive Director for Audacity Productions. Audacity Productions is an organization that produces Winston Salem Fashion Week, a platform for local designers, models, photographers, to showcase their collections, talents before an audience of buyers, influencers and fashionistas.
We are in our 9th year of presenting some amazing designers since 2015. We are also proud to have connected nationally and globally with other major platforms. Our main objective is to educate, develop and connect new or hidden talent to mainstream platforms in the fashion industry that are looking to expand their brands.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
In 2020, during the pandemic we were able to pivot by presenting WSFW online with over 300 views. We were able to host an online upcycle competition, networking event, social event as well as a panel discussion regarding sustainable fashion that included some major social media influencers. From this, we to continue to develop events to include new projects around sustainability such as Project RunSlay, the upcycle competition, which is sponsored by Champion and Hanesbrand, Inc. providing college students majoring in fashion to participant in the competition for a cash prize, along with recognition with an online fashion publication, as well as show their creation before a panel of judges from Champion and Hanesbrand, Inc.
We also created the Swap & Style Event. WSFW collaborated with some major fashion influencers in the industry for the Swap & Style Event. This 2 Day event highlighted the importance of sustainability in the fashion industry. On Day 2, 5 panelists composed of local and global industry experts shared their views on sustainable fashion and how we can use the WSFW platform to continue to spread awareness on this important topic.
We’re proud of the impact that we’ve made in the community and beyond borders.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
It’s important to have like-minded people on your team. For Winston Salem Fashion Week, there are individuals with a love of fashion, inspiring ideas and willing to get in to make the vision and event successful. Delegating and trusting your team is a must. Rewarding them, thanking them as much as possible, to not take them for granted, but appreciate what they bring to the table.
