We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nikita Mitchell a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Nikita, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
It was definitely difficult coming up with a name for my business. Especially because I wanted it to be unique, but also related to what I’m selling.
Usually, you would think of lingerie as something for your significant other (around bed time), or something you sleep in. I also really love the colour pink!
So thinking how I could put those two together, I also thought it would be more exotic if the name was in another language.
It finally came to me one day, and I said this is it!
For those who don’t know, Luna Rosa means pink moon in Latin! I thought it was an amazing name, and of course had the input from family and friends and they loved it.
Nikita, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Nikita and I’m from Toronto, Canada. I’m the founder and owner of Luna Rosa Lingerie.
I started my own business during the Covid-19 pandemic, during lockdown. I had to stop working and I was getting pretty bored doing nothing. I always loved the fashion industry as well. Of course I didn’t just start a business right off the bat. I had this idea for quite sometime, so I knew what I was getting into.
I looked up a few suppliers in the U.S. that offered drop ship, that way I wouldn’t have to spend too much and keep inventory. I also kept in mind that I wanted to cater to all body types. I’m proud to say that Luna Rosa offers sizes up to 3X. I wanted everyone to feel comfortable and sexy in their own skin!
Building a social media page from the bottom is definitely difficult, especially when there’s so much competition. With the help of friends and family, I did start getting a lot of followers and shares. I also reached out to a few influencers so I can get my business name out there. I’m forever grateful for everyone’s support up to this day, especially all my customers!
Of course every business has its ups and downs, but I’m not giving up. Hopefully one day I’ll make it big!
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
To gain new clients/viewers, I definitely try to take part in events throughout the year. Whether it be seasonal markets, outdoor parades or intimate/friend gatherings.
Being a vendor definitely helps out with exposure. I also make sales at most of these events, so it’s definitely worth it!
We’d love to hear your thoughts about selling platforms like Amazon/Etsy vs selling on your own site.
For my items, I sell on my website. I think I chose this option because after researching other choices, for example Etsy, most of these sites charge a fee plus percentage from each item sold. So, I think in the long run it’s the best option and saves you money.
