Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nikita Gupta . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Nikita , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
In 2013, I gave birth to our first child and decided to go back to work expeditiously. I had taken on a new job in a new city, but I truly longed to be at home with our baby. I loved my career, but it was demanding, and we had no family nearby. At the time, my husband and I were both in sales and the best of the best, top 5 % in our fields. He traveled globally, and I had to travel up to 50 % of the time. Ultimately, we both knew something had to give for our child, and so after a year, I resigned.
During that time, I recall being a part of many online communities for Indian interracial couples like us. I’m African American, and my husband is Indian (his family is from North India) and we faced a mountain of challenges to be together, and so had many others. Still, it seemed no one was openly talking about it. I recall an incident in which a woman had to hide in the trunk of a car so that her boyfriend’s family didn’t find out about them being together. It was at that moment that I asked my husband, what if we opened up our lives and shared our story to help others? And he said yes, and this is how the blog www.growingupgupta.com commenced. It was a hobby that grew into a passion and has become a globally known multicultural resource blog.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Nikita Gupta, MBA. I’m a mom, wife, author, writer, blogger, content creator, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. I am the creator of the globally renowned multicultural lifestyle blog, Growing Up Gupta and the author of many interracial and intercultural books on Amazon. I am also the founder of the multicultural family brand; I love masala. I love masala me is based off of my multicultural children’s book and provides multicultural family products via Zazzle. Lastly, I am the co-creator of the first America Black History box for kids by inkidz, and proceeds from the box go to charity.
Prior to creating the blog, I was a sales executive in the K-12 and higher education space. I worked predominantly with disadvantaged school districts and universities to determine ways to improve not only their energy cost but academics, and safety, and security. I loved working with people and creating solutions to challenging problems; hence the creation of the blog as an avenue to help others was seamless. Growing Up Gupta originally started so that my husband and I could share our story, but it has grown into a resource where many multicultural people and couples have been able to share their voices and unique narratives that you don’t hear about in mainstream media. The blog led me to write many books for interracial couples and families, to write for the Lily/Washington Post, the Times of India, and Huffington Post, to be featured on the BBC, and so much more.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
To help as many people as I can and to help eradicate the stigma around interracial marriage and anti-blackness.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Plainly put, it is being able to help others. Yet the satisfaction is in knowing that the blog and stories that others have shared, in addition to our own, connect and resonate with a global audience. The stories have helped many to prevail through the storms of their relationships. Furthermore, my books and the multicultural family brand, I love masala me, have opened the door for much-needed representation.
