We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nikendra Green a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Nikendra thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
I had been working for FedEx for about two and a half years and I would always tell myself this is going to be my last job, I knew I wanted to work for myself and take my DJ career to another level. I didn’t know exactly how it would turn out not having a job because I had been working since high school. I knew if I never took the risk of leaving FedEx I would never know what opportunities I could receive being an entrepreneur. June 2021 I resigned from FedEx and put my faith in God and I believed that I would not fail!!! I prospered and received an financial overflow once leaving Fedex and I knew I had made the right decision for my career and it was one of the best decisions I had ever made.
Nikendra , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Nikendra Green “DJ Sleezy” born in Albany Ga, discovered love for music when I was a baby let my siblings tell it, they said when I was a baby I would be in the car or in the house singing and dancing to everything, but as long as I can remember music has been everything to me!!! I always wanted to be in the band and play the drums and I joined the high school marching band and did just that, I played second bass and was one of the best at it!!! I grew up in between Albany, ga and Jacksonville fl so I’m a country and city girl. When I was younger I always had a cd or cassette player with me and listen to my music on the go daily, mother never had a problem with anything that I did, she always let me do whatever I wanted to long as I didn’t get in any trouble, she knew I loved music and I would blast it everyday like I lived alone, I always wondered why my mom never complained, now that I’m older I realize God gave her the patience with me and my music because it has made me who I am today. I started my business in 2018 and was booked and busy with my mobile dj service, I always knew I wanted to be bigger than the clubs and be my own boss, doing any occasions help strengthen my skills and learn how to please a variety of crowds, I became a celebrity dj and have also travel internationally. My older brother is also a DJ, when he was not home, I would get his equipment and taught myself how to DJ, I just felt like it was very exclusive to be a DJ I looked up to my brother he had all the best music and stayed booked and busy. My brother didn’t have to teach me much because I had taught myself so much on my own but he was very supportive in my career and was there anytime I needed him. I am still learning new things to help take my career to the next level, so I have still been getting DJ lessons even though I’m already a DJ there are so many things you can do to give your crowd a good experience. I am proud of myself for wanting to be more than a club DJ or an local DJ, doing all occasions gives me a challenge because I am able to DJ for different crowds and not get bored with entertaining the same crowds.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best way to get new clients is to give it your all when you are at an event, every event I DJ I make my crowd happy and it’s always at least 5-10 people that come over and get my business card and social media accounts and at least 6 out of 10 will book me in the future.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I would get on Facebook live at least once a week and do live mixes to gain my followers attention. I also promoted my brand daily on all of my social media. Invest in a good quality logo and flyer so that it will catch others attention!!! Promoting your business consistently on social media is very important when you just get started, I also paid for advertisements to reach more people than my followers.
