We were lucky to catch up with Nika King recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Nika thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
My mom unknowingly created a spirit of entrepreneurship in me that has influenced me over the years. As a child, I saw her start multiple businesses to take care of her six kids. They weren’t always successful, but her creativity and determination to keep going is something I will never forget. As for my father, I didn’t meet him until I was nine years old and it probably was good thing. He was somewhat of a rolling stone, but he would always call me his superstar. I’ve learned to not look at the outside world for validation but hold up head up and walk in the room like you belong.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Nika King. I went to college to be a physical therapist but after taking an acting for non majors class I knew I was in the wrong place. I soon begin the journey to pursue my acting career. First landing in New York to do Broadway, but I was not ready for the fast paced environment. I soon set my eyes on Hollywood and I’ve been here for over 20 years. From acting to mental health advocate, I am passionate about bringing healthy food to underserved communities. I’m proud to be on this journey with my mother who is a 3 times cancer survivor. I know my journey from a traumatic childhood to living my dream is something anyone can attain if they stay passionate about what brings them joy.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I remember being in New York with mom during the pandemic. We were both unsure about opening our restaurant, The Blue Tree Cafe and wanted to get away to clear our minds. Then I started researching cloud kitchens and realizing it was possible to pivot during this difficult time. Even though, the restaurant industry is always changing, we stayed the course. We also incorporated my non profit Rose of Sharon to offering diabetes awareness workshops and Reset brunches to show people that taking care of your mental health is a priority. We both know how to keep going despite the odds against us. Our legacy is to do great things and be obedient to God’s call on our lives to take care of people from all walks of life.

Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
The most constant force in my life is my relationship with God. As a child, I thought things would always be bad for me and my family. Now I see everything I have gone through good and bad has molded me into who I am. Adversity is the breeding ground to success. It’s about learning the lessons and using that to propel you into next phase of life.
