Nik, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. The first dollar your business earns is always special and we’d love to hear how your brand made its first dollar of revenue.

I got my first property management client early in my career around 2011. I received a call from a random real estate client who had driven two hours to meet with a different Realtor, only to be stood up. He asked to see a $60,000 listing, so I quickly printed that one along with some other properties I thought he might be interested in. That same day, he purchased two properties. After closing, he asked if I could help manage them as rentals. I had no experience in property management at the time, but I told him I’d get the job done.

That client went on to purchase 100 houses through me and had me manage all of them. As tenants moved out, many of the homes needed repairs, so I brought on maintenance technicians. From that point on, the business steadily grew. Today, the Ascend team manages over 1,500 properties in Kern County with a team of more than 20 employees.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

I started getting into real estate when I was still in college so that I would have a way to pay for my classes and books. I started with just selling homes in the Kern County area, and that eventually snowballed into property management as well. Later down the line we added construction to the mix. My team handles small maintenance fixes all the way up to big renovations. Adding construction gave Ascend a feeling of wholeness. Clients can now purchase a home, flip it, and get it professionally managed all under one company.

Part of Ascend that sets us apart from other companies is not only our total package or services, but also our transparency. If a potential client visits our website, they can easily navigate through our dedicated pages and find our rates, fees, etc. We lay it out clear, because we know it can be frustrating for clients to reach out for something that should be easily acceptable. We have nothing to hide, and I firmly believe that this practice establishes a layer of trust between a client and the Ascend brand.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?

Our reputation has been built on a foundation of trust, responsiveness, and results. From day one, we’ve focused on treating every property and client as if they were our only one, making sure to go the extra mile to find the right tenant, resolving maintenance issues quickly, or providing transparent communication every step of the way. We’ve also made it a priority to keep our maintenance in-house, allowing us to maintain consistent service quality without relying on outside providers. Over time, that consistency, combined with genuine care for our clients’ investments, has earned us the trust and referrals that fuel the growth of the Ascend brand.

How’d you think through whether to sell directly on your own site or through a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc.

We sell all of our services directly through our website. Whether a prospective client is looking to buy or sell a home, use our property management services, become a tenant, or work with our construction team, everything can be accessed through our site via contact forms or application portals. By utilizing our own website, we can tailor everything to our company’s needs instead of adapting to a third-party service provider. This approach allows us to collect exactly the information we need (without unnecessary extras) so we can deliver the best possible service to all of our clients at Ascend.
