We recently connected with Nii Martey Commodore and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Nii Martey, thanks for joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
Thank you so much for having me. I’m thrilled to share a bit about my journey with both photography and event curation because, for me, they’re deeply intertwined. Photography has always been more than just a job—it’s my way of storytelling, capturing genuine moments that showcase people as their most authentic selves. When I’m behind the lens, I’m looking for those raw, real moments that often go unnoticed: a subtle glance, an unexpected laugh, a thoughtful pause. I feel privileged to capture these flashes of realness, because they tell stories that are far more powerful than anything staged.
When I began working as a photographer, I noticed how many other creatives felt a bit on the outside, unsure of where to find their people or connect over their art. This inspired me to start Creators Hub an event curation business. At its core, the mission behind my events is to create a safe, inclusive space where creatives feel they belong, a place where they’re celebrated exactly as they are. There’s a specific magic that happens when creatives come together with a shared understanding and openness—they inspire each other, exchange ideas, collaborate, and grow. My events aren’t just about showcasing talent; they’re about creating a supportive community where people feel seen and valued.
This mission matters to me because I’ve experienced, firsthand, how isolating the creative journey can feel. So, I’m driven to build spaces where creatives feel truly at home, where they can show up without pretense and connect with people who get it. Whether someone is just starting out or is already established, they’re welcome and encouraged to be themselves. I want these events to be a reminder that we’re all in this together and that there’s real beauty and strength in our collective stories.
Ultimately, my vision is to leave a legacy where people feel empowered through their art, where photography captures the real stories and events allow those stories to connect us. Creators Hub is about building a creative ecosystem where everyone feels like they’re part of something bigger than themselves. That’s what drives me every day and makes this mission so meaningful.
Nii Martey, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Of course! I’d love to share a bit about my journey and how my work has evolved over the years. Photography has been a core passion of mine for 6 years now. I think it started from this fascination with how moments could feel so fleeting, yet hold so much meaning. When I began, I was drawn to capturing the little things that tell a bigger story: the texture of a city street, the light in someone’s eyes, or the quiet beauty in an unguarded moment. Over time, I saw how powerful photography could be—not just as art, but as a way to help people feel seen, appreciated, and understood.
So, I started my photography business with the goal of making people feel comfortable enough to be themselves in front of the camera. I work mostly in portrait and event photography, helping individuals and brands capture moments that feel personal, real, and dynamic. My clients come to me because they’re looking for something more than just a perfect pose or polished shot. They want photos that tell the story behind the moment, whether it’s a candid shot of a business owner in their element or a special, joyful family moment. My style is about authenticity, which means I focus on bringing out my clients’ unique personalities. I aim to create images that feel alive, where people see themselves in a way that feels affirming and real.
I actually started out just using an iPhone camera, experimenting with angles, lighting, and editing apps to capture moments that felt special. As my passion grew, I dreamed of taking things to the next level, setting my sights on a Sony ZV-E10. It took time and patience, saving bit by bit from other jobs, but finally buying that camera felt like a huge accomplishment—a symbol of all the work I’d put into my craft. Having real equipment opened up a new world creatively, and every time I pick up that camera, I’m reminded of where I started and inspired to keep pushing forward.
Alongside my photography business, I have Creators Hub, and this side of my work is all about fostering safe, inclusive spaces for creatives. I started curating events because I wanted to build spaces where people—especially emerging creatives—can connect, collaborate, and celebrate their work without fear of judgment. We hold workshops, showcases, networking events, and more, all designed to bring creatives together in a way that feels supportive and genuine. When people attend, I want them to walk away feeling like they’ve found a community that truly values their voice. The creative industry can be tough, and many artists feel like they’re navigating it on their own. I wanted to change that by building events that empower people, giving them a place where they can feel seen and understood.
What sets my brand apart, I think, is the heart behind everything I do. I’m not just about delivering polished photos or filling a room with people. I’m about connection, inclusion, and supporting people on their creative journeys. I’ve worked hard to build a brand that’s rooted in empathy, authenticity, and community. I believe that when people feel safe and supported, they create their best work—and when people see their true selves in a photo, it’s an experience that’s hard to put into words.
The thing I’m most proud of is watching clients and creatives grow in confidence, seeing them step more fully into who they are. I’ve had clients tell me that seeing themselves through my photos changed the way they see themselves, which is the biggest compliment I could receive. For my events, I’ve seen people make connections that last well beyond the event—collaborations, friendships, and even mentorships that blossom because they found a space where they could be open. For me, that’s what this work is all about.
At the end of the day, I want people to know that my brand is about more than just creating images or hosting events. It’s about honoring people’s stories, building real connections, and creating a ripple effect that leaves people feeling more confident, connected, and empowered. Whether you’re looking for photos that reflect your true self or an event that feels like a creative home, my brand is here to make sure you feel seen, valued, and celebrated.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
When I first started my business, funding was definitely a challenge. I didn’t have a big budget, so I relied on saving bit by bit from various jobs and projects, putting aside whatever I could each month. I started with an iPhone camera and worked up to buying my first Sony camera by being consistent and disciplined with my savings. It wasn’t an overnight process, but each small step toward getting the right equipment felt like a real accomplishment. That journey taught me the value of patience and reinforced my belief that passion and persistence can bring big dreams to life, even if you’re starting small.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
My approach to management and entrepreneurship has been shaped mostly by hands-on experience. My 6 years background in sales taught me a lot about understanding clients’ needs, building trust, and communicating authentically—skills that have been invaluable in running my own business. Working in various roles over the years has also shown me the importance of empathy, adaptability, and genuine connection, which I try to bring into every project. Each experience has reinforced the value of setting clear goals, staying curious, and keeping a people-first mindset in everything I do.
