We recently connected with Nii Adu Clerk and have shared our conversation below.
Nii Adu, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
Well, acting careers like all artistic careers are extremely risky. I got into art school which taught me the basics of the craft and the business.
When I started at art school I had no idea about techniques or terminology. Going from being a novice to someone who has a bit more of an understanding of what the craft must contain. Everything was so new to me for better and for worse. The first few months felt like trail by fire. Dealing with the internal battle between wanting to show my Ghanaian parents that I’m meant for this and trying to prove to my art instructors my auditions to get into school wasn’t just luck.
During training I pushed myself deeper into the craft, til specific things became subconscious.
I liked acting before training but once I really started studying and experiencing more impactful performances.
That like turned into a genuine love.
Blessed and truly thankful to still be learning everyday even outside of art school
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m a first Generation American coming from Ghanaian parents. Growing up in the DMV(DC, Maryland, Virginia) area. Always been performing throughout school life.
When it came to the arts discipline, it has always been a consistency for me. Going from dancing, to playing instruments, and then to acting.
I had no connections in the TV/Film or Theatre industry growing up. Everything I achieved was through blessings and will power
The thing that sets me apart from others is my belief that my job as an actor is to give any and everyone the space to feel their emotions, Through TV/Film and Theatre.
Mostly proud of how far I have come into my professional Career which has only been 4 years in.
Gained so much working with amazing Directors, Writers and performers.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding thing being an artist is being able to create projects with heart and intention. Then sending it into the world to witness whatever resonated with whoever experienced it.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to be in projects I can truly say are impactful. Because those were the type of projects that introduced me to the magic of acting.
