We were lucky to catch up with Night Walks recently and have shared our conversation below.
Night, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
Our most meaningful project has been completing our debut album, but that also encompasses a lot of things. We originally came together from random Craigslist ads, each of us ending up in Baltimore for diverse reasons but searching for a musical connection. Shawn and I (David) met first, and played together in his band, Shy Lust. After that project ended, I met Sam, and asked him to join a new project with myself and Shawn. We played for months, auditioning tons of drummers, before finding Alex.
At that point it all clicked, and, fastforwarding a couple of years, we’re now in the final stages of completing our debut album to be released near the end of this year. Starting from our first experience really working together as a band to write, to finding a producer who we work well with and trust, and finally to hearing the (almost) finished product, this project has been an incredible journey. Now, as the final details get finished, we’re starting to look forward again and imagining what album #2 might sound like.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
We are Night Walks, an indie rock band from Baltimore, MD. We are David French (vocals and guitar), Sam Hughes (vocals, bass, and guitar), Shawn Korkie (vocals, keyboards, and percussion), and Alex Kohler (drums and percussion). We came together slowly in 2021 and 2022, as the pandemic eased its grip on us all. I (David) initially started the project in order to record and play live a handful of songs I’d written in the year prior. That idea was discarded pretty quickly though, after we all got together and just started jamming. All these new ideas started appearing, and I think we all realized we had a unique voice and style together. We’ve run with that ever since. Our listeners often comment on how we remind them of some of their favorite artists (e.g., The War on Drugs, Springsteen, The Cure, Prince), but we really have a sound all our own that is hard to pin down.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
The best way to support artists of all kinds is to go out and experience art in person. Just put down the phone and go outside. Go to shows, performances, exhibits, or anything that you have to be in the moment to experience. From a musician’s standpoint we’ve lost a huge number of small, independent venues in the last 10 years, and that’s a direct result of audiences not showing up like they used to. In general it seems like social media is eating up a ton of energy and space, so that we all end up having to spend too much time as “content creators” and not enough is left for the art we love.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Bringing an idea to life is the most rewarding thing for us. We love the life cycle of writing a simple song on an acoustic guitar at home, then bringing that into a band practice and letting everyone interpret it as they will. When we come together and really start crafting each element suddenly you’ve transformed this simple demo into a song. That’s that “first time” feeling you keep coming back for.
