Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Niecy Nicole. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Niecy, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
Looking back at how I started , I didn’t know doing my own hair as a child would bring me where I am today. At the age of 13, when silk wraps and roller sets were a popular thing , it was something I personally didn’t like. It wasn’t the look for ME. I then took matters into my own hands and decided one day that I was going to test the waters and do something myself. It was also going to be FREE , so why not ! The first style I attempted on myself was a high bun, and I think I did pretty good for it to be my first time. I wore the same hairstyle throughout middle school and eventually once I transitioned into high school, it was time for something new.
I enjoyed doing my hair so much, I attended cosmetology school for 2 years at my high school and learned so much from it , when it came to doing my own hair I was becoming better at it. Later on in the year I slowly transitioned to hair extensions. I wanted more length and wanted to try different looks without damaging or over manipulating my hair. I then started wearing sew-ins and I got so many compliments on my hair at the time. I didn’t think too much of it. After a while, I then slowly transitioned into wearing wigs. They were quicker to apply and more convenient for me. When I started doing that, I received even MORE compliments and even people asking if I made wigs for other people.
Once I started realizing that the students at my school were wanting me to make them one , I decided to take my first customer and she loved it. I then decided to take more customers and overtime my clientele grew ! I realized I should take what I do more seriously and when I graduated I decided to dedicate more time into actually starting a wig business.
I started my wig business in 2019. It was NOT easy being a newbie entrepreneur . A lot of things I had to research , from how to grow your clientele, how to stand out in a saturated industry , how to price your worth , all the way down to finding a vendor ! I had to really want this for myself because there were days I got discouraged and unmotivated. DISCIPLINE OVERRIDES MOTIVATION !
In order to go from Idea to Execution , you have to have an end goal ! Take the time out and write down your goals , they can be short term or long term. Once you write them down you work towards them everyday ! Always remember why you started and what you would want your end results to be . I knew from the beginning of my entrepreneurship journey that I wanted to make women feel beautiful when wearing my wigs , I sticked the course , good days OR bad , I showed up for myself !
Niecy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am Niecy Nicole. I am a wig maker & and an educator. I started getting into the hair industry in 2018 all the way up until now. I have some skin in the game ! Have you ever wanted to change your hairstyle up every week but didn’t want to have the risk of damaging your hair ? That is when a wig comes in handy ! I started making wigs because of this exact scenario. As a teenager , I always wanted to change my hair up depending on my mood but I was damaging my hair along the way with so much manipulating , over dying , over cutting , etc. So I decided to start wearing wigs. Not too long after that , I started making wigs for other people and I love it !
I specialize in natural colored wigs , such as black, blondes , reds , burgundy’s, and browns. I love natural wigs because they give a more natural look . My goal is to provide customers with ready to wear wigs straight out of the box ! I want you to be able to apply your wig with ZERO knowledge. Skip the salon ! I do all the hard work for you !
I am so proud to say that I have shipped to almost all 50 states and I am currently working on shipping worldwide. To see my work all over the world means so much to me , and it also goes to show that someone will support you if you can solve one of their problems.
Making women feel beautiful when putting on their wigs has always been my goal since I started , and it’ll never change.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Social media is the BEST way to grow your online business. Your content can be shared to people all over the world . Instagram is one of the main social media platforms I’ve used since starting my business that has helped me gain so many customers. In order for you to take advantage of Instagram to use as a leverage to grow your business , you have to be authentic. BE YOURSELF ! The most important thing I love about Instagram is that there are so many different personalities ! Don’t try to fit in with anyone .
For anyone just starting to build your social media presence , here are a few tips
– Be yourself.
– Post EVERYDAY
– Learn your audience
– Keep up with the trends
– Remain consistent !
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One lesson I had to unlearn along the way as an entrepreneur is that it’s not always PEACHES AND CREAM . Social media can play a big role in making you think that the nice cars , big houses , financial freedom is all there is to it , but it’s NOT ! Don’t get me wrong , it can be that , but with everything comes time. A lot of us don’t share the downfalls of being an entrepreneur, but I’m here to tell you that everyday won’t be a good day , you still have to show up for yourself and your customers. You will have unsatisfied customers , vendor shutdowns , delayed pay periods , no sale days , etc. As long as you remember your why and what your long term goal is ,you’ll be able to get through all of this 1
