We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nicolle Saccone Henry a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Nicolle , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you share a customer success story with us?
I had this beautiful client and her mother passed away. She was getting married and she wanted to incorporate her mother in the wedding. She sent me her mothers wedding veil and dress. However the veil and dress was more of an 80’s aesthetic. My client had more of a 40’s and 50’s vintage inspired vibe going. She sent me her inspiration boards of how she wanted her veil to look, but she wanted the lace from her mothers dress incorporated into the veil. At the time I had also lost my mother and this custom order felt very near and dear to my heart. When I unwrapped the package, the client sent me with her mothers dress and veil. I became overwhelmed with emotions. How she was honoring her mother was so beautiful and it actually was the scariest project I’ve ever worked out because I wanted this to be her dream perfect veil. It took about 2 months but I removed some lace from the mothers dress and used that to create a Juliet cap for my clients veil. I accented it with some silk gardenias. I was so proud of this custom order and she looked magnificent.
Nicolle , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I began NicCoCo Creations as a relaxing hobby because I loved the whole vintage pinup scene that was reemerging in Los Angeles at that time. A friend of mine had a hair bow making business and she told me to start an Etsy shop that it would possibly earn extra income. I gained more than an income. I gained a love for 30’s, 40’s and 50’s vintage styles. I gained a passion for millinery skills that has pushed me to want to learn more to this day. I’m a puzzle solver. When a client has an idea for a custom order but doesn’t know really what they want that’s where I shine. I love the hunt to discover what type of hair accessory, flowers or whatever will create the perfect piece for my customer. At this point in my art I’m obsessed with rhinestones and crystals. I was recently approved to start buying and selling items with Swarovski crystals (the same kind Dita Von Teese uses) so that is a game changer and will provide luxurious creations for my customers. I also have been creating more bridal pieces and would love to create a whole vintage inspired collection. I’d love for my customers and followers to know that each piece is handmade and I want them to feel like it’s not just wearing a flower it’s a tiny piece of art.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I was lucky with social media. I began my business when Instagram just started so there were easier algorithms, my business was able to be seen. Nowadays it’s a bit more difficult with the algorithms, paid ads and just not being able to be seen. Also alot of small businesses are actually being shadow banned and it’s very it’s tough. My followers grew because I was in a niche market, I lived in Los Angeles and was able to go to events, markets and festivals and promote my business. About 5 years ago I moved back to Ohio to be with family and that’s when I became heavily reliant on social media. Then covid made everyone reliant on social media. The advice I would give is be consistent and try not to get discouraged by the low views or likes. Keep active on the sites and if you are able to hire a social media person. I have a lovely gal from Luca Visual media who helps because I still work a full time job. And as we know social media can be a full time job in itself.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Social media is really a necessary evil. I get most of my hits to my website from Facebook and Instagram.
