Nicolette, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.

Photography, while a costly pursuit, can lead to an even more expensive venture when turning it into a business. My journey began when my husband presented me with my first DSLR camera, allowing me to dip my toes into the world of photography and art creation. I honed my skills with this initial camera and explored various free editing software to get a feel for the craft. After a year or two, I took the plunge and invested in a high-quality, full-frame camera—the choice of many professionals at the time. Budget constraints led me to purchase a pre-owned camera from a professional in the midst of an upgrade. It was a gamble, sending $1,200 to an online acquaintance, hoping it wasn’t a scam. This leap of faith paid off when I secured my first client and invested in professional editing software. Gradually, my work gained attention, experience accumulated, and client base grew. The journey from novice to expert in this field has been arduous, but after six years, I find myself thriving, cherishing every moment, and grateful for the bold risk that set it all in motion.

Six years ago, my journey in photography began with a significant life change: leaving my dental hygienist career in South Carolina to embrace motherhood in New York. Amidst the joys and challenges of being a new mom, I discovered a passion for capturing life’s moments and taught myself the art of photography. My learning curve was steep, but my dedication was unwavering. A year later, a move to Michigan marked the official launch of my business, where I prioritized creating a comfortable environment for my clients, allowing their true essence to shine through in every photograph. My mission has always been to transform apprehension in confidence through the lens of my camera. In 2023, my family and I settled in the enchanting city of Savannah, GA, whose picturesque landscapes serve as an idyllic canvas for my work. Here, I’ve had the privilege of photographing not just the locals but also visitors from afar, all while exploring and drawing inspiration from the beauty around me. My love for travel and creative expression continues to grow with each click of the shutter.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?

As a dedicated dental hygienist, I cherished my profession and the opportunity to care for my patients, educating them about the significance of oral health. However, the arrival of my first child marked a turning point, necessitating a shift away from my career. My husband’s work hours, coupled with the dental office’s early mornings and late evenings, made it impossible to secure professional childcare that accommodated our demanding schedules. Embracing the role of a stay-at-home parent brought me immense joy, yet the need to financially support my family led me to seek employment that could align with our unconventional hours–a challenge that proved to be quite rewarding.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?

The key to expanding my client base has been authenticity; staying true to myself has made all the difference. I make it a point to establish a genuine connection with each client and their loved ones, going above and beyond to ensure their comfort and satisfaction. As a result, my clients become my advocates, sharing their positive experiences and the images we create together with their network, which naturally attracts new clients. Authenticity breeds trust, and trust brings growth.
