We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nicole Webb a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Nicole, appreciate you joining us today. One deeply underappreciated facet of being an entrepreneur or creative is the kind of crazy stuff that happens from time to time. It could be anything from a disgruntled client attacking an employee or waking up to find out a celebrity gave you a shoutout on TikTok – the sudden, unexpected hits (both positive and negative) make the profession both exhilarating and exhausting. Can you share one of your craziest stories?
Fortunately, or unfortunately, Webb Trendz Photography began with the loss of my husband in a tragic motorcycle accident in 2020, during the tumultuous times of the COVID-19 pandemic. His passing made that year even tougher for me and my family. It was a stark realization that we had been prioritizing family over other aspects of life like travel, hobbies, and businesses, leaving many experiences unexplored.
In the midst of this turmoil, I decided to create a Bucket List as a way to navigate life without him. I started traveling and documenting my adventures through blogging, sharing them with others on social media. Encouragement from my sister and brother-in-law led me to start a YouTube channel, giving birth to ‘2 Tears in a Bucket List.’
As I delved deeper into videography using my iPhone, I discovered a passion for capturing moments through photography. Intrigued by the art, I invested in my first camera and embarked on a journey of learning. Taking classes and shadowing experienced photographers, I honed my skills until I felt confident enough to offer my services.
Although I am still on a learning curve, I find joy in seeing the progression of my work. Reflecting on how Webb Trendz Photography originated from a Tear and a Bucket List, I am filled with gratitude for discovering a talent I never knew I had. I am certain my husband would be proud.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Nicole Webb, and I am a photographer and vlogger. My journey into this industry was unexpected. Following the tragic loss of my husband in an accident, I found myself searching for ways to navigate life without him. I created a bucket list as a means to discover new and exciting experiences. Documenting my adventures on social media, I found that people were captivated by my bucket list accomplishments.
As my skills in videography improved, I delved into photography, initially using my iPhone to hone my techniques. Over time, I received inquiries about my services, prompting me to invest in my very first camera. My inaugural photoshoot, with an emerging artist, marked the beginning of a steady stream of bookings. I derive immense joy from uncovering unique locations and perspectives to showcase my clients. Whenever possible, I strive to capture linear compositions, harnessing the natural geometry of the environment.
I take pride in my journey of growth, discovering a passion and sharing it later in life. To both potential and returning clients, I pledge to meticulously craft their envisioned photo sessions, as conveyed through their client questionnaire forms. I deeply appreciate their trust in Webb Trendz Photography to immortalize their cherished memories and pledge to honor their time and vision.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
When I initially ventured into photography, my primary goal was simply to grasp the intricacies of using a camera. It felt overwhelming and bewildering at first, but with dedication and practice, I began to find my footing. Along the way, I compiled a list of milestones I aimed to achieve in my creative journey, including family portraits, maternity shoots, infant photography, senior portraits, boudoir sessions, and engagement photo shoots.
Now, having gained experience in each of these areas, I’m excited to pursue my ultimate aspiration: photographing weddings. It’s a significant milestone for me that I’ve recently been hired to capture a wedding in August, and I eagerly anticipate the opportunity to secure many more bookings in the future.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
As a novice photographer, I quickly realized that offering specials was an effective strategy for building a client base swiftly. Not only did it provide me with more opportunities to hone and refine my skills, but it also attracted clientele eager for quality photos at discounted rates.
In addition to specials, I frequently conduct model or location calls, offering sessions at reduced prices. This approach not only expands my customer base but also allows me to experiment with new locations, potentially setting the stage for future photo sessions.
After every session, I ensure that my clients fill out a consent form allowing me to share their photos on my social media platforms. Tagging my clients in these posts enables their friends to view my work, fostering word-of-mouth referrals. While growing my clientele has presented its challenges, I’m gratified to note a steady increase in referrals, a testament to the quality of my work and the satisfaction of my clients.
