Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nicole Swartz. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Nicole, thanks for joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
I started my first business in 2015. It was a skincare company and we sold at craft fairs and festivals. I remember the first festival, I left with $500 in my pocket and I was hooked. Soon we were in stores locally and then around the state. After two years, we were in stores around the world. That’s when I received a cease and desist letter from someone who had already trademarked my brand name. I wasn’t legally allowed to use it and I had to rebrand the entire business in 30 days. It was a nightmare.
I was already an attorney so I should’ve known to handle the legal areas. But honestly, I was too focused on making sales and shipping products. After this happened, I became obsessed with trademarks. I didn’t want this to happen to anyone again!
So I started talking to my small business owner friends about my trademark situation and none of them knew anything about trademarks. They started asking me to trademark their businesses and soon a law firm was born.
I created Sprout Law to help women=owned businesses trademark their brands…and the first thing I did was trademark it!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’m a trademark attorney and a small business owner. I run Sprout Law, which is a modern law firm for women business owners. We help protect your brand name, logo, and tagline from copycats. We also talk a lot about celebrity trademarks on Instagram and Tiktok. Because I think working with a lawyer should be fun (and our clients agree!) I’m most proud of the businesses we’ve helped launch. I love seeing an idea turn into an actual business turn into financial freedom.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
It’s not about numbers or followers. Those are empty stats that mean nothing to your actual business. Social media is really about building relationships one person at a time. Every client we have also becomes a friend. That means we DM each other, comment on their photos, congratulate them on milestones, and show up to their events. Building a successful client business means you’ve made a lot of friends.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Doing fantastic work for your existing clients. Half of our clients come from social media and half of our clients find us through referrals from our existing clients. When you get a great result from a client, and you’re nice/friendly/fun along the way, they’ll refer you to their friends too. It’s doubled our business and it takes no extra work beyond what we’re already doing. It’s the easiest way to grow.
