We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nicole Springer a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Nicole, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
My whole life I’ve wanted to be a singer but it wasn’t until late 2019 that I was ready to take the leap into a professional music career. When I started music as a side gig back in 2011, I was also working a 40-50 hours a week office job. It was a balance I was more than willing to find to pursue my musical aspirations but after some years the packed schedule and exhaustion took its toll.
After some planning with my wife, we created the opportunity for me to pursue music full time. It started with hitting the open mics in town, busking at city markets, and sharpening my craft as a solo musician and has now resulted in me accepting a 2 month contract offer with The Royal Caribbean and a fruitful career making music in Kansas City. It has taken so much growth in confidence and skill to be where i am today in music but it’s been worth every baby step to get here and see my dreams through.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers?
My name is Nicole Springer and I am a full time musician and singer-songwriter out of Kansas City, MO. I’ve had the dream of being a singer since I was a little girl but it wasn’t until the last 2 years that I’ve been able to explore music as a professional career and full time passion.
As a professional musician, I perform up to 3 hours of music at venues in Kansas City and beyond usually 4-6 times a week, using my 3 octave range voice to sing a huge variety of cover music and my own heartfelt original songs. Additionally, I have a high energy 4 piece band that accompanies me on my original music. We headlined our first festival this summer performing for over 10,000 people, we opened for Melissa Etheridge in 2021, and released a critically acclaimed and award nominated album this past May called “Chase the Light”.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My music is all about my mental health journey. I make it a point to make songs with purpose, creating pieces that serve as therapy to wherever I am on my path towards healing. So when it comes to my original music, I truly hope I am able to move others with the vulnerability I express through my singing and writing.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Goodness, I’ve had multiple times where I’ve had to not only pivot but start over completely. At the beginning of my mental health journey, I also picked music up as a side gig. Being on the front end of healing invited some of the wrong people into my life musically. I had yet to develop the confidence to stand up for the music I wanted to make and ended up allowing others to take the reign of my music’s direction. Thankfully as we live we learn and now I feel more confident and in control of my creative process and music than ever before. I’m so grateful I didn’t give up!
