We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Nicole Mariee. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Nicole below.
Nicole, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
Music has always been apart of who I was from an early age, but I knew I wanted to become a singer when I was in elementary school. It was around 9 or 10 when I decided that. I remember watching artists like Destiny’s Child and Alicia Keys on tv and said to myself, “I want to be a singer when I grow up” I wrote my first song at 11. When I got to high school things became much more serious when I began taking piano lessons. That’s where my training on the piano became much more serious and even intense at times. After high school, I went to college and that’s where my vocal and piano training took off to another level.
Nicole, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I was born and raised in Austin, Texas. I didn’t really grow up in a musical family but I began playing the piano by ear at 5 or 6 and I started singing in church at the same time. I used to love singing lead as a kid, I enjoyed having the spotlight! By the time I started college, I was already classically trained on the piano but I just began taking voice lessons. In 2015, I released my first single, “One day at a time”, then the following year, I started performing live full-time around Dallas, venues like; The House of Blues, The Lizard Lounge, The Opening Bell, The Regal Room, just to name a few. As an artist, what I believe sets me apart of other artists, is that I’m me. I put in a lot of work to get here as an artist, and nobody can take that away from me. What I’m most proud of is having the courage to create songs, and stories and to be vulnerable with my listeners. That’s not an easy thing to do because there will always be naysayers but what’s important is to keep going because there will be people who will love your music.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
The one thing that society can do to help support artists is to buy our music. Streaming only does so little. I’m grateful, I am but the real support is buying our music. Spotify, and other streaming platforms does not pay that well even if you have a million streams. That’s the bottom line.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Lately, I’ve been pursuing other venues as a musician. I’ve been blessed to have my first sync placement in a movie that came out in 2021, called “Broken” it’s available to watch on Video on Demand and other streaming platforms. That is my mission going forward, landing more sync placements.
