We caught up with the brilliant and insightful NeekoMya a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, NeekoMya thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
Yes! For the last 12 years. I have been able to earn a creative full-time living off of my creative work/talent. It took years of consistency, hard work and drive to reach. Most weekdays I am off, but the weekends are my normal work week but its also possible to grab a Wednesday or Thursday ladies night gig in and around my city. Some of my my major steps have been, having a thriving international entertainer for 10 years in some of the most exotic countries and for some of the most luxurious hotel brands and cruise lines. One of my most favorite moments was being accepted by Pandora Radio and having my very own station and my second favorite is performing for who society deems the “ Richest Man” in the world Mr. Amazon aka Jeff Bezo. I think I could’ve sped up the process if I had focused on honing my stage presence, skill more. Knowing what I know now, as soon as I graduated high school. I would’ve went straight to pursuing my international dreams early.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I got into the music business after Meeting and working with Debra Killings, one of the baddest bass player, songwriter and BGV the world has to offer. If you’ve never heard of her, Google her Lol! Any way. I am the lead vocalist of a R & B and Soul band called The NeekoMya Experience. I love that I get to travel the word and make a living doing something I truly love. I would like for my supports to know. I stood on a mountain of No’s!!!! To finally reach my goals. Never give up on your self and always stay true to your gifts and talents
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
The resources I wish I knew about were the International agents that scout talent world wide. If I had known at 16 that I could have a international agent. I know would’ve started sooner
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to have the freedom of entrepreneurship. The work life balance in my life is a must
