We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nicole Pittman-Staab a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Nicole, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear your thoughts about family businesses.
I absolutely loving running and working with other family businesses. I started my career working with my father, and being with him taught me so much about running a business. I also cherish all the time that we got to spend together. Now I own a business with my husband, and we work so well together. I handle things like marketing, sales, contracts, etc. and he handles video production, creative projects, editing, etc. For us, working together has been an absolute blast! We homeschool our 11 year old son and I love bringing him to the office with me and teaching him what it takes to run a business, just like my Dad did when I was my son’s age. :)
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started my career in printing 20 years ago with my father, a legend in the printing industry, Robert Pittman. My first position in marketing was at Trend Offset Printing, I was Executive Vice President of SMP Inc., and am now President and CEO of ROF Industries Inc. ROF specializes in video production and photography. Some of our clients include Smart & Final, Special Olympics, Serta, Suzuki, and many more. I also made my way back to Trend Offset Printing, which is now Mittera and am an Account Executive that sells printing and marketing to my amazing clients.
I wear many hats and have been described as a ‘Type A Workaholic.’ What I am most proud of is that I don’t rest until my clients have exactly what they need and are 100% pleased with the final product. We are lucky because most of our clients have become great friends, which makes working every day much easier.
I think what sets us apart from our competition is that we honestly love what we do and we love working with people. My husband Chris and I tend to connect with people very quickly and most of our video & photo shoots end up being so much fun! It amazes me that we have now had our business for over 10 years and many of our clients started with us in the very beginning.
In my free time, I love spending time with my family, practicing Muay Thai at Kings MMA, and dreaming of the next time I’ll travel to my favorite country, Ireland.
Can you share one of your favorite marketing or sales stories?
One of my favorite sales stories is when we worked with a client here in California on a 3-day corporate event and we provided video, drone, livestream, and photo services. After the event the client assumed it would be our last time working together because most of their events are held in other states and they usually hired crews in each individual state. I worked with the client on a budget to handle all of their events throughout the US, and we ended up landing the entire account. It took a lot of time organizing all the details, finding savings in travel, etc. but the time spent was well worth it. Plus it helped the client tremendously only working with 1 company so that all of their videos and photos had a similar look and feel.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
I have many ways that I keep in touch with my clients. Every month I send an email to say hello, I still send handwritten thank you cards, and I call. Every clients like to keep in touch in a different way, some love calls while others only prefer text, some want to go to lunch, others prefer going over details via email. I think it’s important to keep in touch based on your client’s personality and preferences. I never want to annoy any of my clients. :)
