Nicole, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today The first dollar your business earns is always special and we’d love to hear how your brand made its first dollar of revenue.

During Covid, I was on the social media app Clubhouse.

I heard a lot of small business founders asking questions such as “How do I get featured in the press?”

I heard a lot of “experts” provide answers to these questions that I simply didn’t support. The answers were leading these founders to invest in programs or spend money in a way that I knew was not necessary.

I have been a journalist for 20+ years, and as a member of the media, I knew I could do better for these small businesses.

That’s exactly when I realized I have all of the answers these people were seeking.

The next day I went back on the app, introduced myself as a PR & Media Strategist, and 48 hours later a celebrity hair stylist and beauty brand founder, who heard me speak on the app, reached out and became my first client.

Nicole, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

Have you seen The Devil Wears Prada? Replace Andy with Nicki and that’s how I got my start in magazines. Canvassing Midtown in search of the perfectly gooey chocolate chip cookie for my boss’s Monday afternoon sugar craving—been there, done that.

After paying my dues, I rose through the ranks as a beauty editor and have worked at or written for countless magazines such as Oprah Daily, Marie Claire, Shape, In Style, and many more.

I also created my own personal brand — The Beauty Girl — where I share the latest tips, products and trends as a beauty expert on TV. I’ve booked myself on hundreds of local and national shows such as TODAY, EXTRA TV, FOX Weather, ABC, and NBC, I’ve been a keynote speaker for fortune 500 companies, and I serve as a brand spokesperson.

Now I’m extracting my 25 years worth of industry expertise to help small business founders get the media attention they deserve.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?

My business is not built on smoke and mirrors. I don’t have a fancy website or invest in ads. Instead, my client results speak for themselves, and my professional expertise has enabled me to build a solid reputation. In fact, my clients often call me “The Real Deal.” And much of my new business is word-of-mouth as my clients and other industry professionals often recommend me.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?

Looking back now, I can say the most unfortunate professional circumstance ended up being the best gift. I was up for a job at a national magazine, and it was down to myself and one other candidate.

Although I was qualified, I was told I didn’t get the job because the other candidate happened to be besties with my would-be boss at the time.

However, this experience made me realize that I didn’t want to put myself in these situations ever again…where my ability to get a job was not based on my talent but other variables that were out of my control.

So I decided to take back the control, and that’s when I went off on my own and started my entrepreneurial journey. I’ve never looked back!
