We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nicole Ortega a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Nicole , appreciate you joining us today. Alright, so one thing we think people don’t talk about nearly enough is investments – either time or money. What’s one of the best or worst investments you’ve made and what did you learned from the experience?
**My Best Investment: Taking a Chance on Myself**
As a business owner, the best investment I’ve ever made was in myself. After obtaining my Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH) license in 2010, I pursued further education to become a Registered Dental Hygienist in Alternative Practice (RDHAP) in California. I graduated in 2014 with a clear target patient population in mind: individuals suffering from dementia and Alzheimer’s, inspired by my personal experience caring for my grandmother who had dementia.
At that time, I had no background in starting a business; I was venturing into uncharted territory. With faith in myself and a commitment to make a difference, I took the leap to start my own independent portable dental hygiene practice. The journey was challenging, filled with obstacles that tested my resolve and determination.
These firsthand experiences motivated me to write my second book, *Starting Simple*. My goal was to help fellow dental hygienists navigate the complexities of starting their own practice. I wanted to create a streamlined guide that not only supported my colleagues but ultimately increased access to dental care—an essential service I believe in deeply.
Before this venture, in 2011, I had the opportunity to write *Tickle My Teeth*, the first children’s electric toothbrushing book. I recognized the advancements in toothbrush technology and the scientific backing that highlighted the benefits of using electric and power brushes to reduce dental disease. Knowing there was a real need for early education in oral hygiene, I worked hard and landed a publishing deal to bring my vision to fruition in 2020.
The same year, I launched Lovely32, which began as the largest original pin collection for dental professionals. Over five years, the brand has evolved significantly. Today, we not only offer custom enamel pins but also cute apparel, stickers, hair accessories, and much more! Collaborating with big brands, influencers, and creators has expanded my reach and made the journey incredibly rewarding.
Taking a chance on myself with an open heart and the intention of making the world a better place has opened countless doors for me. I’m filled with excitement for every new day, knowing that the possibilities are endless and that I still have many more smiles to inspire. The most valuable lesson I’ve learned through this experience is that believing in yourself and your mission is a powerful catalyst for change, both personally and within the community.
Nicole , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
Both my portable dental hygiene practice and Lovely32 began as side hustles. During that time, I worked part-time in private practice while also raising my children. I spent my weekends seeing patients and dedicated my late nights into the early morning hours to pack Lovely32 orders, sketch designs, and create prototypes.
My artistic background allowed me to enjoy the independence of running my own business, and I was motivated to prioritize my family while pursuing my passions. I knew I wanted to transform these side gigs into my full-time career. After years of hard work and determination, I finally achieved that goal.
Since 2020, I have been fortunate enough to operate my portable dental hygiene practice around my children’s schedules, balancing my roles as a full-time mommy and business owner. Now, I manage every aspect of Lovely32—designing, packing orders, and overseeing operations—all on my own. This journey has taught me the true meaning of dedication and resilience, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to build a life that harmonizes my professional aspirations with my family life.
