We recently connected with Nicole Maddox and have shared our conversation below.
Nicole, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We love heartwarming stories – do you have a heartwarming story from your career to share?
Miracles and dramatic transformations are common in my world.
A patient came in with devastating metabolic syndrome and struggling with obesity. He was confined to a wheelchair due to the inflammation and discomfort in his body as well as the devastating effects of uncontrolled diabetes and hypertension.
He was sad and depressed, he resisted any feeling of hope. I conducted a functional movement and orthopedic assessment as well as an array of functional lab testing. We were able to establish a treatment plan that was realistic and sustainable.
I encouraged the patient to believe in himself because I believed in him. He did well and within three months he surprised me by dancing into the Clinic! Celebrating that he is able to be an attribute to his family instead of a burden.
He fell in love with how good it felt to be healthy and was filled with hope and excitement to share with others that it’s never too late to believe in yourself and small sustainable changes over time are transformative.
Nicole, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I chose my industry because I observed how illness and pain devastated peoples quality of life. It broke my heart, I wanted to help.
Spirituality was the secret ingredient I needed to help me connect individuals to their health more sustainably.
I was raised in the heart of America where wholesomeness and organic farm to table living is the norm. Being connected to nature and grounded in health and wellness is who I am.
The biggest surprise that I have discovered throughout my years pof leading people to connect to their own personal healthy lifestyle was how often their chronic issues were rooted in disconnection from themselves.
As I opened up space for patients to discover a healthy relationship with themselves, becoming more self aware and present, their mindset shifted. This opened them up to solutions that were sustainable. They were able to find joy in connection within themselves. They become whole and complete declaring they are healthy people that make healthy choices consistently.
When we search externally for our happiness or when we avoid discomfort with numbness or repression we separate our consciousness and body. We feel a lack and try to fill it externally only to fail to feel more disconnection so numbing the discomfort shows up in unhealthy choices that lead to chronic health issues.
I began my career in chiropractic and sports medicine. My passion for holistic health led me to becoming a functional medicine doctor as well. Still challenged to find the root cause I got involved in Epigenetics and found my passion.
Being able to connect people to their unique genetic profile offered clarity where they are vulnerable to developed chronic health issues and how they can create a diet, workout and healthy routine to support regeneration, longevity and healing in their body.
Nervous system regulation allows a person to slow down and be present in the moment. When we are present in the moment, we connect to ourselves, others and life. Therefore helping people become mindful about their stress response, if they’re reacting or responding to the world around them, as well as supporting their bodies with healthy choices creates happy people and happy people make for a happy world.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
In order to peruse my dreams in becoming a holistic doctor I had to get divorced. This was a contentious endeavor that lasted way beyond the finalization of the divorce, this bankrupted me and the chronic stress devastated my health. Moving through healing myself gifted me a passion and knowledge for functional medicine, conscious living and mindset.
Through this journey, I learned the importance of prioritizing yourself and becoming your own best friend. I had always been a people pleaser, high achiever, and willing to go the extra mile. I thought this is how you earned love and acceptance. What I discovered is that love comes from within.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
I would choose the same path, the same education. With that said, I chose the most difficult path because in my opinion this path created the strongest foundation for understanding of the nervous system, the human body, and better understand the complexities of innate intelligence and its healing power.
Socrates: “To know thyself is the beginning of wisdom.”
Hippocrates: “Let Food Be Thy Medicine and Medicine Be Thy Food.”
Einstein: “Everything is energy and that’s all there is to it. Match the frequency of the reality you want and you cannot help but get that reality.”
This is my philosophy for myself and for my patients. We discover the depths of who we are through moving through what we are avoiding. What we desire is often on the other side of what we are resisting.
