We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Nicole Lyn. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Nicole below.
Nicole , appreciate you joining us today. Is there a lesson you learned in school that’s stuck with you and has meaningfully impacted your journey?
Oh, what an intense question.
The most important lesson I learned was you’re never too young or too old, to start over or to get help. A little backstory! I had just started 9th grade and I was struggling mentally, emotionally and I was just going through a lot internally. I was never a fan of school because I was bullied during my elementary and jr. high years, and so there was a lot of anxiety surrounding school. Side note, being bullied does something to people’s self worth, self-esteem and confidence, be kind.
Anyway I was in my math class, and I’ll be honest I was being a defiant brat and talking back to the teacher I had, his name was Mr. Gaeir. That day, I remember very vividly, was just a really bad day. My parents were stressed because of me, I was crying, overwhelmed and wanted to give up. I guess you can say that day, it just all came to a breaking point, and I could not catch my breath. Mr. Gaeir pulled me out of class and let me know he was concerned and after speaking to him for a few minutes, he said something to me that saved my life, and he didn’t even know it.
Right as our conversation ended, he said “Ask for help. If you need it, ask. It’s never too late to get help, it’s never too late to start over. Doesn’t matter how young or how old you are, you can always start over. Understand that it’s ok to ask for help if you’re struggling or if something is going on.” He, nor my family, knew that day was almost my last day. Had Mr. Gaeir not pulled me aside and said what he said, I wouldn’t have intentionally given my parents a reason to pull me from that school and send me to get help, because I needed it. That’s a whole other story, but for another time.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I come from a small town in San Diego, Ca. I absolutely love my town and grew up there. I am extremely introverted with a huge obsession for reading, I have to carry a book with me to read everywhere I go. I love coffee and sort of a Disney nerd, which I embraced a long time ago. My daughter is a Disney nerd with me, but not my sons, which, ok fine! (Lol)
I am somewhat of a corporate girly. I do the admin side of things for a small painting company, which I love. Our company does everything from residential to commercial painting. We also specialize in Basecrete / Sandblasting, which the process of that is so cool to watch. I do everything from scheduling, taking leads, creating job folders, hiring, retaining, etc..I also help with the marketing, weekly/monthly hours and making sure it all matches for payroll. I do have a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice Administration, and currently working on my Master’s in Paralegal Studies.
I believe what sets me apart is my ability to adapt in challenging, stressful and high-intensity situations. It’s my passion for delivering high quality work for my team and company. I also love the fact that I see things from a different perspective and share those perspectives because they open up the door for new concepts and improvements. I’m proud of that ability because it has helped my new company and the old company I used to work for.
If there is one thing that I want people to know about me it’s that whether at work or making videos on tik tok, I’m not aesthetic. I’m quite chaotic, but in an OCD kind of way. I’m a clean freak, but my because my mind is so chaotic, everything around me has to be in order. It’s a very odd thing, but it’s gotten me where I am now, so no complaints. (Lol)
I’m a sensitive soul at the end of the day. Which I’m ok with!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
So I use my Tik Tok more than any other platform, and it was a huge risk for me to start posting. I was terrified! But I took the risk and stopped fearing what people would think of me, and I started posting.
I don’t really have a niche, I post the most random stuff, but it’s been successful so far. I post what’s real and what really goes on in my life, again not aesthetic.
I don’t know exactly what jump started everything, but day after day I kept posting, my platform kept growing. I did a lot of look of the day, Disney, things to do in San Diego and some did well, some didn’t, but I never gave up. So my advice is don’t give up, keep posting, stay authentic and take the risks.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
There are a few things that have helped build my reputation at my new company and I would say it’s remaining loyal, dedicated and taking initiative to think outside the box.
Most importantly it’s always been my reliability and staying consistent.
With social media, I would say my reputation grew by remaining true to who I am. I’m not a niche gal, and I think for so many, that’s relatively relatable.
