We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nicole Lin a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Nicole, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
When I was in college, I majored in advertising. Because of the connection between advertising and motion graphics, I had the opportunity to get in touch with motion graphics. During this period, I found it very exciting to tell a story with design and animation. The emotions that can be conveyed through shape, color, composition, camera language, and various animation speeds are far beyond my imagination. I began to be interested in the motion graphics industry and wanted to become a good storyteller.
To become a professional motion designer, I came to the United States from Taiwan and am currently pursuing a Motion Media Design MA at SCAD.
Nicole, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hi! I’m Nicole, a Motion Designer based in Savannah, GA. I am from Taiwan and am currently pursuing a Motion Media Design MA at SCAD. I enjoy exploring different styles and like to hide some humorous inside the story. During my free time, I enjoy visiting great bakeries, listening to podcasts, and cooking. If you also like cooking, definitely check out my project “Before Add in Cart”! It’s a story about the imagination before buying shrimps. I’m now working on my final project and will be graduating in June of this year. I’m happy to share my story here. Nice to meet you all!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I feel happy every time I see a smile on my audience’s faces! My intention for becoming a Motion Designer is to tell a good story. I will try my best to convey stories with good design, which is also the driving force for me to constantly polish my technical skills. I enjoy observing people’s expressions after watching my work, and I also appreciate receiving feedback. Whether the message is conveyed or not, it is a reward for me to see the audience’s smile in response to my work!
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Yes, there is! I would like to become a Creative Director one day in my creative journey. That’s one of the reasons why I am studying at SCAD and specializing in Motion Media Design. I will have to become a professional motion designer to achieve my goal. I’m still on the way and keep improving myself. Wish me good luck!
