We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Nicole Lier . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Nicole below.
Nicole , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Some of the most interesting parts of our journey emerge from areas where we believe something that most people in our industry do not – do you have something like that?
Most people believe at a certain age you have to stop wearing certain articles of clothing. I was recently told that at the age of 43 I should no longer be dressing like a teenager (I was wearing ripped Levi’s)!
I gently reminded my community that age is just a number and we should all wear what makes us feel happy and confident, no matter our age!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m a 43 year old happily married mom of 4 children. I have a Bachelors Degree in Science and am an occupational therapist. I have been practicing as an OT for the past 20 years up until just a month or so ago when I decided to make my fashion/content creation my full time career. Fashion is my passion! I absolutely LOVE affordable fashion and styling my mid/plus size body and sharing with my community how to wear clothing that makes them feel amazing.
I love HELPING others (also why I became an OT). I struggled dressing my larger body back in middle school / high school days and lacked confidence. I am now happy with ME and enjoy sharing that with my community and love being able to help others exude that same confidence they deserve to feel!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I am a size 14/16 pear shaped 43 year old woman. My mid/plus size body alone can definitely bring out the haters, especially when I’m sharing up close and personal details of outfits including swimwear, bras and underwear! 10 years ago I would have NEVER been able to withstand the negativity of the people on social platforms who enjoy ridiculing others. Today however, I am a much different person. I am much stronger mentally and I actually feel sorry for that person- what a life they must live to feel the need to bring others down.
I no longer allow others negativity to make me feel less of a person! I know I am pretty amazing and have a wonderful and supportive family and community who follow along on my journey!!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I get asked this question often! I started my platform with just friends & family following me! I then started tagging brands and people who I admired in the industry (Ashley Graham for instance – she actually tagged me in TWO of her story shares and personally sent me a voice message)! She’s amazing!! Anyway- I started gaining new followers from that plus the tagging of brands who would also RESHARE me in stories. Plus, reach out to other like minded persons in your industry. Ask them to share each other or do a fun style session together (since I’m into fashion)- you will slowly but surely start gaining new people who can see why you are doing what you do!!
