We were lucky to catch up with Nicole Jasulavic recently and have shared our conversation below.
Nicole, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
Every single wedding is meaningful. No two weddings are the same. I love witnessing the traditions with different religions, cultures and families. Or how people put their own spin on their special day. Witnessing a fathers first look with his daughter. Touching up the grandmother’s hair who is thrilled to be alive to witness their grandchild get married.
Hear siblings reminisce about a missing special someone.
A wedding hairstylist is more than hair. ✨
Nicole, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a CT based Luxury Wedding hairstylist and have been licensed for 18 years. I discovered my passion by accident after realizing college wasn’t for me. When I was in high school trade schools weren’t discussed. We were taught that college prep was the only option so naturally I enrolled at my local community college. I was building my art portfolio to transfer to an art college. One of my side hustles was a receptionist at a bustling salon, Tendrils. After working there for 2 years it hit me, hair is art. About a year later I was licensed and taking my own clients. Two years later I rented a chair and ran my own business for about a decade. I needed a change once I had my first baby and stumbled into wedding hair. I QUICKLY realized that THIS is my passion. Now I run my own business managing my clients on their wedding day. When I first started working as a Wedding hair specialist, it was with a Wedding Company, Transcendent Studio. They were great to me. Helped me with my confidence. Watched my kids so that I could book hair trials. Just like the butterfly that I am, it was time to spread my wings and fly on my own. Connecting with other independent artists has been helpful in building my career. We refer weddings to each other and help assist one another. Help hold each other accountable. The CT wedding community is small but close.
Pushing yourself out of your comfort zone. Sometimes you just have to push yourself and do it. I had to push myself when I assisted Amanda Pepin on a film, Mr Birthday. This was right after giving birth to my babies. I felt rusty and out of place, but I did it and it was awesome. Every new experience has brought me here today.
I am a firm believer that you “cannot elevate if you don’t participate.” What I mean is you cannot become the artist you desire to be if you do not participate in elevating yourself. EDUCATION. I travel into NYC multiple times a year to stay rooted in my craft. I have assisted the wedding queen Senada on two weddings. Going back into NYC this March for another hands on class. It is important to put ego’s aside and know that there is always room for improvement.
I want my clients and future clients to know how much each wedding means to me. I genuinely feel like every wedding is the best wedding. Many hairstylists can make you look beautiful but I want my clients to feel beautiful. I go the distance for my clients. I have scraped sticky tags off bridesmaid shoes, tapped dresses to bodies, helped locate the missing rings. A lot can happen on the wedding day and I love to be there to help it run flawlessly.
Our studio space is in Prospect, CT inside of a wellness center, Attiva. When you walk in you are greeted by a desk and receptionist. A gym, physical therapy, holistic wellness coach, med spa, therapists and Good Vibes Beauty Co. We are all female owned and driven towards our own version of wellness.
The studio is where I offer my hair previews. The space is so peaceful and I take pride in others experiencing it. There is a bridal closet that has jewelry, accessories, veils, robes for clients to sample. Often clients don’t have these items the day of a preview and it helps to embody how you will feel the day of your wedding. Some people need extensions for todays “wedding looks”. I offer a Rental Extension program to my clients. I am obsessed with Bellami Silk Seam extensions. I rent them out with a deposit that is returned once they are returned with their pre paid/package is returned. This program is a client favorite.
I am most proud of being able to do something that I love. It shows in every wedding.✨🤍
Have you ever had to pivot?
I took a few years hiatus while I raised my children. I had 3 babies in 4 years and was lucky to be able to focus on them solely.
During this period I couldn’t see myself going back into the hair salon. I had no idea that there were other avenues for licensed hair professionals.
The pivot in my career lead me directly to wedding hairstyling. You are never to old to discover a new passion.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn was to not be influenced by others around me to the point where I lost myself.
It is so easy in this world to get caught up in someone else’s vision. Someone else’s passion. In a world where we are constantly comparing ourselves to others around us it is hard to be original.
I have had to work hard to remain honest to myself, my craft and my journey. To learn to be inspired and appreciate other creatives and maintain boundaries to not loose myself.
