We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nicole Hennessy a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Nicole thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the trajectory of your career, we’d love to hear the story and details.
I have had a few of these moments in all honesty! If I had to pick one I would say it was during a massively hard family situation. I found out my teen daughter was pregnant. I had created an online presence sharing motherhood and womanhood at this time as well. Once our family new what would come next and with permission from her we shared openly what my daughter was going through and my response. This opened a door that i did not expect over 30 million people saw our story and we built a community looking for connection and a safe place to be vulnerable. So many women reached out to share stories or looking for guidance. This was the push for me to expand my brand with coaching services for women and wellness events to empower women, while helping them build real connection.
Nicole, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Of course! Professionally I offer one on one coaching, and online courses for women who are craving a change, sometimes they do not even know what that change is (I love that part, watching a women discover herself is magical). I have a guided journal called “I Can Love Me” available on amazon. This journal is to help women discovery their beauty. I host a Full Moon Women’s Circle every month in Maryland and host Women Retreats along the East Coast. These are the things that feed my soul in my work. I love every part of the work I do but when you bring a group of women together that have never met and watch them connect, support and grow together while feeling safe to let their hair down, have fun, and also be vulnerable it is magical. My work is my passion.
Personally, I am a mother to three kids. I have moved around the States and lived overseas, I have been poor, alone, and scared. I have needed a village and I have built them from scratch. I was a teen mom with a front desk job counting my cash to hope I had enough for dinner and gas that week. I have had my heart broken and I have found love. I am no different from so many women in this world. I survived many different versions of abuse and sadness. I refused to settle in life, I craved comfort. Now I get to help other women find the comfort, the balance, the fun, the village they have been craving. Life is messy and hard, but it is also beautiful and easy, you just need help finding it sometimes.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn what the definition of success was in my mind. Running a business is constant work and I am doing all the things all the time. I also am living in a family with 8 members of all ages, so I have to balance that as well! I want to be a good mom and Life Coach. I thought success would look like making a large income. One day when I was feeling very discouraged with my business finances, I asked myself “Why do I do the work I do?” after I went through my own list of whys in my head, I realized I was accomplishing everything I wanted to. In that moment I let go of the imposter syndrome, the fear of failure, and the financial pressure. I said, “Nicole if you are doing all the things that led you on this career path, you are successful.” I focus on reaching financial growth goals separately from being successful. I finally got out of my own way.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
I think we all can agree that constant learning and education is important in any field. However, the one thing I think people have a hard time with but is so important is talking to people about what you do regularly and collaborating. In the working world we all tend to get overly competitive! Listen, I rather work side by side with other amazing people in my industry then feel threatened by them. People will come to you if they feel you are what they need and they won’t if you are not, it is simple. So, stop being mad that someone else in your area is sold out or has a waitlist when you don’t. Build relationships that are genuine, refer people to them that might be a better fit for them, Work on group events together. Last but not least STOP being afraid of telling people what you do! Shout it from the roof tops no one can work with you if they do not know you exist and the best way to get good clients is word of mouth recommendations.
