Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nicole Edson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Nicole, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your business sooner or later?
I feel like this is a trick question for me because I have always had aspirations of owning my own Photography/PhotoBook business, but I feel like if it came a day sooner, I wouldn’t have been as prepared to take on the many tasks that went with it. That being said, I have learned many things along the way in every job title and career path I chose to take and every single one prepared me for the many challenges I face as a business owner myself. I felt like I was finally at a point in my life that I had everything I needed to branch out on my own and I’m very happy I trusted the process it took to get me to this point. I am a firm believer that every step and every role I’ve taken on was, and still is, necessary for not only my growth but also for my successes. I am beyond grateful for the teams I’ve had an opportunity to be involved with, the people I’ve met along the way and for every business that also invested in me and my future. I have truly learned from the best of the best!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
The journey that illustrates my resiliency is that of my first year as a businesswoman, an entrepreneur. I will say that I worked a lot harder behind the scenes my first year than most of my peers and supporters were even able to see. I learned to be resilient by showing myself grace in periods of what seemed only to me as stagnancy. Resiliency showed up for me as “keeping the faith” in spite of my fears of failure. I became resilient by reminding myself that this isn’t a fast (or easy) process, learning how to operate a business. And lastly, assuring myself that all things will work itself out in its own time and when the path ahead seemed a little unclear, I made sure I stayed focused on planning the work and working the plan.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
There is one book that really helped me solidify myself as an entrepreneur and it’s called “How to Start Your Own Business…and Make it Work” by DK. It goes into great detail from “before you start” to “first steps” through running and growing your business. It pretty much traveled with me everywhere I went. Another resource I found extremely helpful in my journey as a businesswoman was just reaching out to other passionate, successful and seasoned professionals in the same industry I was going into. By taking the time to reach out to people who truly inspired me has gifted me opportunities of a lifetime. It allowed me to gain a tremendous amount of insight from some of the most incredibly successful people in my field. There was so much to gain from their guidance, encouragement and even the sharing of how they got to where they are and sharing their techniques so I too can succeed. I am forever grateful for the contributions and collaborations of the very people I sought out and now I have guidance, I have an inside look and most importantly I now have support in ways my peers wouldn’t have been able to provide just on inexperience alone.
