We recently connected with Nicole Drew and have shared our conversation below.
Nicole , appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
At Rater, we are known as the “Anti-Catfishing” single’s social app because we put an emphasis on dating safety and security features. We conduct sex offender and violent felon checks on each new user, plus encourage our users to verify their photos and identity. Rater also utilizes a human verification rating questionnaire, which gauges initial interaction between matches – good and bad. Unfortunately this has not been standard practice in the online dating sector, so cat-fishers and romance scammers are at an all time high on most major dating platforms. Rater aims to disrupt the current trust and safety practices within the worldwide dating sector.
Nicole , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am Nicole Drew, Founder & CEO of the Single’s Social App, Rater.
I founded Rater after I was victimized in a romance scam in 2018. After this experience, I found that the platform in which I met this individual did not remove his profile (even though I reported it) and I had no way of warning other potential victims. I’m sure he went on to scam more women. The concept and mission behind Rater was born!
I’m a first time Founder & CEO. My education is in counseling psychology and my career was previously in executive support. I’ve worked for start-ups all the way to very large companies, such as Samsung and Johnson & Johnson.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
Rater is completely self funded by myself and friends & family. I was fortunate enough to be apart of an acquisition by J&J in 2019, so I had a financial “nest egg” to start Rater. I raised a friends and family round very early on and that capital got Rater through the development and launch. Rater is growing and scaling, so now we are eagerly working to obtain Angel and VC funding.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think Founder PR has been pivotal for building not only Rater’s branding reputation, but also my credibility as it’s leader. Starting with local publications, all the way to Global Dating Insights, which revolves around worldwide leaders in the dating sector. LinkedIn has been the most successful tool for networking and collaboration.
