We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Nicole Dest. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Nicole below.
Nicole , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Looking back, what’s an important lesson you learned at a prior job?
Working at Foot Locker taught me how customer relationships shape the entire experience. It wasn’t just about selling shoes; it was about connecting. I remember a regular customer who came in often, just to talk sneakers. By taking the time to listen and remember his preferences, I saw how genuine interactions could build trust and loyalty. That experience taught me that business is built on relationships, not just products. Now, with Naked Frogs, I bring that same focus on connection, creating a culture where each interaction is meaningful and every customer feels valued beyond a single transaction.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Canvas rebel
The story of Naked Frogs begins in a place most wouldn’t expect — Baltimore county detention center. Serving a year sentence, I had a lot of time to think and confront who I was, stripped of all external labels and expectations.
I used to make all kinds of art to pass time from drawings to mini sculptures (carved out of soap) to the point where i was fully booked with commission jobs from birthday cards to the monthly bulletin to custom clothes.. All while incarcerated
I realized there was something beautiful and powerful in embracing exactly who I am, regardless of my surroundings. I didn’t think my doodles and fidgeting with objects had much significance ironically until I was in an environment where I could see the impact of a piece of art changing someone’s entire mood/perspective. Even if just for a brief moment. Art is healing
As I thought about the business I wanted to create, Naked Frogs became the perfect name. It represents shedding layers, being raw and authentic, and adapting to any environment. The word “naked” symbolizes vulnerability and honesty, while “frogs” embody adaptability, resilience, and growth. Plus, the initials N(d)F were already my own, making it feel even more personal.
I ended up getting my BFA in computer aided design at Towson University after I got out of jail. I have the skillset to 3D print a house but I have an unapologetically & undying love for clothing.
I became a top seller on Depop, sourcing and selling vintage clothing across the country and recently have began selling signature as well as custom pieces.
Naked Frogs isn’t just a business; it’s a way of life that encourages people to be who they are, wherever they are, without holding back. authenticity in a world where we’re constantly told to present a certain image, is very rare. And Naked Frogs stands out by inviting people to embrace their true selves in any and every situation.
Naked Frogs is that it’s more than a clothing brand. it’s a testament to personal freedom and the courage to live boldly.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been building genuine relationships and focusing on word-of-mouth. Rather than solely pushing promotions, I aim to create meaningful connections with each customer, ensuring they feel valued and understood. And in my opinion, the best way to achieve that is on ground , in person, in their face, having these experiences in real time. Happy clients naturally share their experiences, and that organic growth has been powerful. By emphasizing quality service, honesty, and an authentic approach, Naked Frogs has built a reputation that speaks for itself.
Exponentially grateful

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A big lesson I had to unlearn was that following the rules and always playing it safe would lead to success. Growing up in a conservative environment, I was taught to stick to the straight and narrow, follow the guidelines, and avoid risks. But as I stepped into entrepreneurship, I realized that mindset held me back. In business, growth often requires you to take risks, challenge norms, and sometimes even break the rules to create something unique.
You have to fully embrace your vision, even if it feels risky. Because if you don’t believe in you, who else will? Going against the grain has led to the most growth and memorable experiences. I’ve learned that real success comes from trusting yourself, taking bold steps, and letting go of the need to play it safe.
