We were lucky to catch up with Nicole Chan recently and have shared our conversation below.
Nicole, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
I make my living entirely through photography. I left a secure job in management consulting to follow my creative passion, which was the biggest gamble I’ve ever taken.
My approach to establishing my business was pragmatic—perhaps mundane. I started by assisting anyone who would let me, committed to the grind, and ensured I was as indispensable as possible. I invested every penny I made back into learning more about marketing and operations for small businesses, or upgrading my equipment.
Building a sustainable business doesn’t come with shortcuts. You might encounter a few lucky moments, but it’s your hard work that positions you to take advantage of those opportunities. It’s important to focus on the broader vision—consider your life goals and how your business aligns with them. Stay away from finger-pointing. Strive to offer outstanding service and be a kind person.

Nicole, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Nicole Chan, a Boston-based wedding photographer. I am passionate about capturing real and candid moments.
My team and I provide wedding photography and videography (www.nicolechanphotography.com). I also am a commercial photographer, working with businesses and brands (www.nicoleloeb.com)
I’m most proud of making my clients feel comfortable, allowing my team to capture authentic, heartfelt moments. I am also proud of our commitment to inclusivity and diversity, coupled with meticulous organization and being all-around nice and friendly people.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Consistency. Be a nice person. Be helpful. Give before you take. Connect with people on a human level, not on a “what can you do for me” level.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source of new clients has been word of mouth, and providing exceptional service to my existing clients.
