We were lucky to catch up with Nicole Burgio recently and have shared our conversation below.
Nicole, appreciate you joining us today. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
It’s wonderful to hear that you admire small businesses like mine. In the cleaning industry, I strive to stand out by offering personalized and eco-friendly cleaning services. While many cleaning companies use conventional cleaning products, I’m working on creating my own green cleaning products. These products are not only effective in maintaining a clean and healthy environment but also environmentally friendly. This approach aligns with my goal of making a positive impact on both the well-being of my clients and the planet.
One story that illustrates the importance of this difference involves a client who was particularly sensitive to harsh chemical cleaners. We switched to our eco-friendly products, and the client was not only satisfied but also relieved that their health concerns were considered. This experience reaffirmed the value of our commitment to green cleaning, and it’s something I hope to continue and expand upon as my business grows.
Nicole, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Of course, I’d be happy to share more about myself and my cleaning business.
I’m a 38-year-old single mother to two wonderful boys, aged 7 and 4. I embarked on my journey into the cleaning industry after leaving an abusive relationship of 22 years, and this experience empowered me to take control of my life and build a better future for my children. In April 2022, I took the bold step of starting my own small cleaning company. My main motivation was to create a safe and stable environment for my family while pursuing my passion for cleaning and helping others.
The core of my business revolves around providing high-quality, personalized cleaning services to my clients. I understand that a clean and healthy living space is essential for well-being, and I take pride in ensuring that my clients’ homes are not just clean but also safe for their families. What sets me apart from others in the industry is my commitment to eco-friendly cleaning products. I’m working on developing my line of green cleaning products that are both effective and environmentally responsible. This focus on sustainability aligns with my values and my goal of contributing to a cleaner and greener world.
What I’m most proud of is the journey I’ve embarked on, leaving an abusive relationship and building a business from the ground up to provide for my children. I want potential clients and supporters to know that my brand is founded on resilience, dedication, and a commitment to making a positive impact. When you choose my cleaning services, you’re not just getting a clean home; you’re supporting a survivor who’s determined to create a brighter future for her family and promote a more sustainable way of living.
I’m incredibly grateful for the support of my clients, followers, and fans, and I look forward to serving and inspiring others through my work and my journey.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Absolutely, I’d be happy to share a story that illustrates my resilience on this journey as a small business owner and single mother.
Shortly after starting my cleaning business, I encountered a significant challenge. One of my biggest clients, who had been a consistent source of income, unexpectedly decided to terminate our contract due to budget constraints. This hit me hard, as it represented a substantial portion of my revenue.
In that moment, I faced a difficult choice. I could have given in to despair, feeling overwhelmed by the sudden financial setback. However, I decided to use this adversity as an opportunity for growth. I knew that I had to be resilient not only for my sake but for my two young boys who depended on me.
I reevaluated my business model, cut unnecessary expenses, and worked even harder to attract new clients. I expanded my marketing efforts, reaching out to local communities and leveraging social media to promote my services. It wasn’t easy, and there were days when I felt discouraged, but I persevered.
Slowly but surely, I began to rebuild my client base. It was a testament to my determination and resilience. Over time, I not only replaced the lost client but also gained new ones, expanding my business further. This experience taught me the importance of adaptability and resilience in the face of adversity. It’s a reminder that challenges can be opportunities for growth and that, as a survivor, I have the strength to overcome them.
This story serves as a source of motivation for me, and I hope it inspires others facing similar challenges in their entrepreneurial journeys.
