We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nicole Brice a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Nicole, appreciate you joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
In college, I was working as on-air talent and a production director for my college radio station, 90.9 FM KSLU. It was at this time that I knew I wanted a career where I could create, but I wasn’t quite sure as to how I could achieve that. After college, I began working in Marketing for the corporate sector from 2006-2020 and after that career came to an abrupt halt, I knew I wanted to finally pursue my dreams. In 2021, I became a published author for the first time after contributing to the bestselling book, “My Labor Pains Were Worse Than Yours”. After the book came out, I knew that I did not want to stop the momentum, so I continued to dive into many artistic endeavors and am currently building a brand from the ground up via an online music, arts, and entertainment magazine that launched in October 2022.

Nicole, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Nicole Brice, and I am the Editor-in-Chief of a new online magazine focusing on indie music, arts, and entertainment called Mixed Alternative Magazine. I am also a published author, a Veteran of the armed forces, and a mom. In an industry that is oversaturated with talent, it is often difficult to break through the clutter and noise. That is where we come in. We want to put a focus on those who create in hopes of inspiring others. Another mission of ours is to spotlight the musicians, artists, authors, and other notable talent you might not otherwise hear about.
Mixed Alternative Magazine is a proud, woman-owned business created by me and Managing Editor Keeley Brooks to provide you, the reader, with a wide range of local and national quality-balanced articles and stories covering many genres of music and different facets of art and entertainment. Our focus is on providing a non-discriminatory platform for independent talent of all kinds to introduce themselves and showcase their mad skills to the world and not get lost in corporate advertising. Our sights are on content, not sales.
We pride ourselves on our humor, knowledge, experience in, and obsession for all things entertainment, while adding our special editorial touch and commitment to keeping it real. And we do just that by ditching the rules and regulations .
We like to think of ourselves as the signal standing out from the noise of the rest of the media landscape. With such an influx of mass-produced content out there, we want to be the ones standing apart from the crap. By using a different approach and outlook, we strive to bring you the most entertaining, highest-quality content we can, and we proudly do so by rejecting the mainstream and forging our own way with no hard news, no religion, no politics, no rules, no red tape, and no censorship.
Just sheer entertainment, passion, and personality.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
In 2019, after working in Marketing since 2006, I was faced with the dilemma of being replaced at the job I loved. Initially, I was devastated, but in 2022, I finally mustered up the courage to do something completely different career-wise and I have never looked back. Even though I didn’t realize it at the time, the loss of the career I had for so long was a blessing in disguise.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to learn the hard way that loyalty to a company is not always valued, and they will replace you in an instant, but that there is a purpose to everything and never give up.
