Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nicole Booz. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Nicole, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
This is something I’ve given a lot of thought to lately as I have been restructuring one of my businesses. I think to be successful, you have to constantly ask yourself to rise to the next level and really dig deep into what success looks like for you. I started my first business 10 years ago now and while I still run that business daily, as a mom of two my priorities are different now and the time I have to commit is different now. What it takes to be success is defining what that looks like for you and making every decision you can to move towards that vision.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Nicole Booz – I own the online community GenTwenty.com and the sister site GenThirty.com. On GenTwenty, we have a packed resource library full of free workbooks, worksheets, spreadsheets and more that is completely free! We aim to help twenty-somethings navigate their 20s and figure out their next steps in life. I co-host The GenTwenty Podcast where we delve deeper into this topic and issues to provide actionable advice to our listeners.
On GenThirty.com, I discuss topics and create guides related to both parenting and living life in your 30s so that today’s generation of thirty-somethings can make the best choices for them and their families.
I am also the co-owner of an online boutique called The Capsule Collab where we feature seasonal capsule collections perfect for yourself or for gifting curated from small businesses. We also give back 10% of our proceeds to a different cause each quarter.
On top of that, I am also the author of The Kidult Handbook which was published in May 2018 but Adams Media, an imprint of Simon and Schuster.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
My main website, GenTwenty, has been around for almost 10 years. I have seen many similar sites in the niche come and go. What I think is the main driver of our reputation is consistency in publishing and focusing on what we do best which is publishing blog posts and creating free downloads for our audience! The goal is always to help twenty-something who are struggling and I think continuing to be open-minded and adjusting our content as twenty-somethings age has been crucial in our maintained success.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
When it comes to business, one thing I had to unlearn was that you always need to keep up with the trends. There are always going to be new platforms that you’re encouraged to show up on. When I first started publishing in digital media, a lot of the platforms we have now didn’t exist – not even Instagram! Long story short, I spent a lot of time creating content and posting it in places where I wasn’t connecting with my audience. It was a huge waste of time and resources! And now I am able to spend my time creating in places where I really thrive, and for me specifically, that is my blog.
