We recently connected with Nicole Biello and have shared our conversation below.
Nicole, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
One of the most meaningful projects I’ve had the opportunity to work on is a student film called Implosions. Implosions is so meaningful to me because it deals with mental health and empowering themes of rising above challenges. It is also based on a real person/story, that of my incredible director Lisa Sherman. While my journey has been different from my character Lou’s, there are many similarities between us and the fights we’ve fought. Lou, who battles OCD and ADHD struggles to complete assignments and manage her intrusive thoughts. She hits a low point and ends up battling her demons in an animated mindscape where she learns she is able to fight back for the first time, that she is strong. It has been an absolute honor helping Lisa to bring her vision and story to life!
Another incredibly meaningful project I’ve led, another student film, is called The Glorbis. The Glorbis is meaningful to me for many of the same reasons, and it actually hits closer to home than Implosions in terms of my own story. The Glorbis is set in an alternate reality where a young girl Maya enters a facility to work on her “issues” that she’s been told she experiences. She is in complete denial in the beginning, attempting to sign herself out immediately. This attempt is in vain and she ends up lashing out at the other patients and staff in denial and desperation. In the end, after seeing The Glorbis (which is symbolic, as the rest of the film is), she realizes the damage she has caused and is able to accept that she in fact does need help.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got into acting professionally in the year 2020 and it is my greatest passion in life. What sets me apart from others, quite simply, is that I’m myself. I think every creative individual in this industry, myself included, brings their own wealth of unique experiences, talent, and essence to the table! I’m proud of the things I’ve accomplished thus far in my career and so so grateful to have worked on a number of student films, indie projects, and even the Gossip Girl reboot. My work comes from a place of purpose and impact, as my goal is to tell stories that need to be told, to make audiences feel all types of things.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I’m pursuing a career in acting because I am absolutely in love with it. Film/TV has impacted me in ways that have changed my life in the best way, and my ultimate goal is to do the same for others.
I’ve turned to entertainment for many reasons. Sometimes I’m looking to get out of my head and laugh a little, to experience something new, or just to pass the time. At other instances, I’m hoping to see struggles similar to my own, accurately depicted on a screen; something I can relate to. New seasons of shows, upcoming feature films, etc… they continue to pique my excitement and suspense, giving me something to look forward to; in my darkest times, something to keep me going.
I want my work to be somebody’s escape from the reality of their difficult circumstances… I also want to acknowledge that reality by telling the darker, more challenging stories that cause people to think and feel so deeply… I want to make people laugh, cry, smile, and everything in between… I want to create and portray relatable characters so that even just one person in the world can tune in and feel less alone. I want to uplift, inspire, and entertain others through everything I put out into the world. Acting is such a magical, expressive art form, and my passion for it grows every day.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson I had to unlearn is ignoring red flags for the sake of opportunities. Not all opportunities are good ones!
I worked with a “production company” earlier in the year 2023 on a pilot, and they ended up not being the people they attempted to present themselves as. There were tons of false promises, things that sounded just too good to be true, and major communication issues throughout my time working with them. I spent tons of my time, energy, and even money traveling to be part of a project that never came to fruition due to a lack of professionalism and drama. There is much more to the story, but in the end, I allowed myself to be manipulated, gaslit, and emotionally mistreated by a group of people I thought had my best interests at heart. Unfortunately, it affected me for a while, but I have been able to bounce back better than ever! This industry is full of incredible, passionate creatives, but also those who prey on others for their own gain.
