We recently connected with Nicole Beckum and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Nicole, thanks for joining us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
To be successful it takes a lot of hard work and dedication. I think people hear that and think, “well, duh,” but they don’t realize how much hard work and how much dedication it takes. You have to want to be successful. You have to have a drive that makes you continue to get up every day and spend long nights honing your craft. You have to be open to learning from others, no matter how much you think your way is “right”.
I spend a lot of time researching ways to do what I do better. I have to be open to the new ways of doing things, and keep up with trends while also keeping my own style present. If I didn’t I would never be successful.
Nicole, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am the owner and co-creator behind Kaleidodyes, a tie dye company out of Ethridge, TN. My husband and I started tie dyeing to create merchandise for his band, Yonder Grove, to sell in 2021. After our shirts were so successful, we decided to really buckle down and ‘do this thing’, and I came up with the name Kaleidodyes. It’s funny, I didn’t want to tie dye at all, but he forced me into it. Today, I couldn’t love it more. I took the reins after that, and really made Kaleidodyes my own. He is still very much so involved though, and I couldn’t do this without him.
We create tie dyed clothing and accessories of all kinds. I even recently made a blanket! We largely pre-make our clothing to sell, but I am no stranger to the custom order. I have several very dedicated customers, and I appreciate their support more than they know.
What sets me apart is how I am constantly researching new ways to do what I do, honing my craft, and keeping up with the latest trends. Of course, I love traditional liquid dyes, but there are so many patterns and techniques out there. Why limit yourself?
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I have a chronic condition that can affect my balance and vision, but I never let it stop me. I will be in my studio with double vision, dyeing away. Some of my coolest items have come from a time when I couldn’t see properly.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Word of mouth and craft fairs. The more people who can see and appreciate what I do the better. Tie dyed items don’t translate as well in photographs as they do in person. You have to see to believe, truly. I have dedicated customers all over the state of Tennessee, and several other states as well.
