When I started my business, I wasn’t entirely on my own—I sold out of a partnership I was involved with, and three other members of our team came with me. Having a team from day one was a huge advantage, as they were not only familiar with my working style but were also integral in helping create the company’s vision, branding, logo, and mission statement. The transition was smoother than it might have been otherwise because we had already built trust and a shared sense of purpose.

What was unique about this process was that we collaboratively shaped the company’s identity together from the ground up. This approach made everyone feel more invested in the business from the start. Looking back, I wouldn’t change much, as that shared foundation set us up for success early on.
One challenge we’re currently facing is ensuring that new hires aren’t just a good technical fit but also align with our company culture. We take our time with hiring because maintaining our strong, cohesive team dynamic is a priority. The entire team is involved in the interview process to ensure any potential hire aligns with our values and will contribute positively to our culture. At 20 years old, I found myself juggling three jobs—at a pizza parlor, a gas station, and as a cage fighter—while taking 21 units at college. The financial strain was immense, and the physical and emotional toll was even greater. I was a single mother, often sleeping in my car because it was the only shelter I could afford, with my young son staying with friends or family for safety.

One particular night stands out in my memory. After finishing a late shift, I returned to my car, only to find it broken into. The few possessions I had were scattered, and the sense of violation was overwhelming. Sitting among the shards of glass, feeling utterly defeated, I wept for what felt like hours. It was one of those moments where giving up seemed not just a possibility, but a reasonable option.

However, amidst the despair, I made a decision that would redefine the course of my life. I resolved not just to survive but to change my fate. This decision was fueled by the fierce determination to provide a better life for my son. I began knocking on doors, seeking better employment that could offer a semblance of stability and respect. After countless rejections, I secured an interview at a local tax firm. The hiring manager recognized the determination behind my tired eyes and gave me a chance—a chance that turned into a career-defining opportunity.

This role not only provided stable income but also a mentor who believed in my potential. He taught me everything about the business, setting me on the path to eventually founding Elite Tax Partners.
