Nicole, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about how you got your first non-friend, non-family client. Paint the picture for us so we can feel the same excitement you felt on that day.
I got my first paid social media management client for Newly Uncovered Media through a friend during a pandemic (2020). My friend started her business and had questions about social media. She wanted to know how to market her services online. Although I was eager and willing to provide my services for free, my friend saw the value in my services, and insisted on paying a monthly retainer. Within a six-month period, I increased my friend’s social media follower count by 150% with only organic marketing (no paid advertisements).

I got into social media marketing in college. I interned for a radio station and one of my responsibilities included taking photos for the radio station’s social media pages. The photos I took for social media had a higher engagement rate compared to the content that I didn’t create.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Networking. Networking. Networking. I can’t stress this enough. Whether it is virtual or in-person, I always recommend that people attend networking events as a form of promoting their businesses. In addition to networking, I would suggest hosting workshops and create effective and informative social media content.
Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
When I first started my business in 2019, I used the money I eared from my 9-5 to fund my business. Then in 2021, I received a grant for my business through the county that my business resides in. This particular grant was specifically for those businesses who were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. I encourage all business owners to apply for business grants.
