We were lucky to catch up with Nicolas Golden recently and have shared our conversation below.
Nicolas , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
This certainly pertains to my field, but it’s absolutely applicable to anybody who wants to achieve success. The first and most important thing is to define success; what does it mean to you personally to be “successful”? For some it could be making a million dollars, for others it could be working a job they can make a difference in the world, community, etc. I recommend keeping this broad enough so that you don’t get discouraged if you don’t hit every one of your 57 check points on what you deem success to be. But specific enough so you have an obvious path you need to take to achieve this. As with many things, balance is key. Keep this definition in line with your goals, morals, and aspirations. Don’t get caught up “looking” successful to others, be authentic to your true self.
Once you’ve established what success looks like to you, you need to have the consistency and drive to consistently work towards that. Consistency, and work ethic are the biggest determinants of success. You have to be able to not only do the work, but do the work when you don’t feel like doing it. The man that outworks you, will always be in a more advantageous position than you.
Last but not least, do not work alone. Work hard, AND smart. A team beats a solo player every time, all the time. Even if you are not forming a formal team, having those you can fall back on, rely on, keep you accountable are instrumental in your success. You cannot do everything yourself, and you should not try to either. Learning to delate tasks to others will save you time, money, and brain power. Collective cooperation and collaboration keeps success obtainable.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a Director/Cinematographer from the DMV Metro area. My production company and I, Indigo Bear Films, produce and create professional commercials, ads, music videos, and more for companies, brands, and artists alike. We strive to make everything we work on have the look and feel of a cinematic experience. Beautiful imaging paired with powerful messaging, storytelling, and emotions.
Humans are driven by stories, since mans conception we’ve told stories. Nothing has changed but the medium. We work with people and companies that’s actually have something to say, and need someone to get it heard.
If you have multiple revenue streams in your business, would you mind opening up about what those streams are and how they fit together?
In addition to our production services, we also have a gear rental service where we lend out gear to any other production company or creative looking to make a production of their own. Video production is such a collaborative field, and if we can help others in anyway we are going to do that.
We also have plans of opening up our own studio in the future. This is one of our future goals that we are working hard to achieve. It will act as a base for our team, an additional location to shoot videos and photos, and a storage house for our rental service.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
If there is one book I can recommend for anyone to read, it is “The War of Art” by Steven Pressfield. This will change how you view your craft, and the forces that try to prevent you from working on said craft. An eye opening read that I recommend to anyone who has work to be done.
