We were lucky to catch up with Nico Vergara recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Nico thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
One of the biggest risks we took was opening our second location. This location was way more expensive then our first location as well as only 10 minutes away from our original location. We went to visit the location first and loved the look of it, we just couldn’t stop thinking about the risk of taking customers from our Fremont location. These are the things that can sink a small business and it almost stopped us. After long consideration we decided to take the risk and ultimately it has turned out to be the best decision we could’ve made!
Nico, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Honestly everything I have learned has been from trial and error. I feel like that is the way you have to learn as a small business owner. It is the beauty of it.
Nico’s is a Real fruit ice cream company that imports a machine from New Zealand that takes locally sourced berries and our vanilla ice cream base and blends it together to become a light and fluffy soft serve texture!
We are most proud of the community we have created. Our goal from the start was to create a space everyone felt comfortable coming to. A space we could host events as well as create a place to harbor memories of everyone who stepped in. An experience at Nico’s is something we want people to remember and we believe we have created that.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Honestly, social media.
Social media has been our biggest outreach and tool to reach new customers. We have put in so much effort to stay consistent and on brand.
Any advice for managing a team?
For us, we have always tried to create a space where everyone is heard.
We hate to use the word boss because that imply’s we are the ones in control and only have the ideas but honestly our best ideas come from our team.
Make sure to treat everyone equally and create a space where your team feels comfortable to come to you with an issue and a solution.
