We were lucky to catch up with Nico Sweet recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Nico, thanks for joining us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
As a creative, taking a risk is part of this lifestyle. At first it may feel like you’re sacrificing alot but as you progress, things start to feel more like prioritizing time. For me it was when I decided to take myself serious and start rapping. Nobody saw my vision then, not even my mom. Looking back now I understand that she was just afraid for me and if I didn’t listen to myself and take that leap, I wouldn’t be talking to you today!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Stephanie Nicole Crawford, known professionally as Nico Sweet, is an American rapper and songwriter. Originally from High Point, North Carolina, I made my way into the industry writing songs for myself and other artist.
In 2016 I got with the rap collective Macibision led by artist YZM. Flew to Tampa, FL, met with Yzm, he liked me. Thought my music was top tier! So we shot some videos, did a few shows and after going back and forth from NC to Tampa I decided to move down permanently to further my music career.
I gained attention after dropping my single ‘Nah Nah’ in 2018. Performing at festivals and opening for acts all over Tampa and Saint Petersburg, Florida. I also caught a bit more attention after Singer/Songwriter T-Pain played my single ‘Mmhmm’ on his Twitch stream.
I love what I do as a female rap artist but it is hard work. Don’t get me wrong, THESE BLESSINS… yes ma’am but women are still fighting for a voice out here! So I commend you if you out here being a professional neck stepper! Get it boo!
What I love most is that the core of me is art and the fact that I get to do for a living, That’s wild to me! Art is subjective and that’s so beautiful to me! Art can be ugly, sexy, loud, calm and I love that my music evokes different types of emotions in my listeners. I’m finally seeing my community, people who support what I’m building. I dont have a name for my supporters yet but we’re working on it, lol
So yeah, please book Nico Sweet for your next music event, party or celebration!
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Yes I have a quick story! Right before the pandemic in 2019. My family and I lost our place and was homeless for about a few months. Once the pandemic hit, that’s when balancing a rap career and holding down life seemed impossible. I continued booking shows and making videos. Also having a job as an essential worker in the heart of a horrible pandemic. Once we got approve for our apartment in 2020, I was able to get back into the musical lifestyle of Nico Sweet! And still, it took another year before my career really took off!

How did you build your audience on social media?
CONTENT. CONTENT. CONTENT. That should be tattooed on me somewhere lol but really your audience is out there and the easiest way to find them is to BE SEEN.
I took advantage of social media by joining the masses. Twitch streams, Twitter threads, IG lives, Facebook lives, contests, competitions, whatever was happening to where I can get my music to a lot of people at one time. AND IT WORKED but to keep those new followers you need consistency and that’s why having content available is important.
