Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nickolas Ballard. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Nickolas , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
My most meaningful project I’ve had the opportunity to work on was TV show called Roberto written and directed by Iver William Jallah. Roberto starring Juan Carlos Sanchez, a recent graduate from a university in Venezuela moves to the U.S.A. in hope of a better life and new beginning. Roberto rents a room from his new roommate Leroy starring Jermain Hollman who offers him an exciting new internship. What could go wrong? Roberto goes out in the real world to learn on the job while meeting many new people on his way to the top.
This film required an excellent cast and crew to bring to life. I had the opportunity of being Casting Director/Producer of this film. When I read and analyzed the scripted, I gained a deep understanding of the characters, their motivation, and overall story. Based on the script and the director’s vision, I determined the type of actors needed for each role, including lead, supporting, and minor characters. I organized auditions where actors came in to read for specific roles. Even called few of my acting friends in to read selected parts. During this pre-production process, I really enjoyed because to me it’s the most crucial phase that lays the groundwork for a smooth and efficient production process.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m originally from New York. Graduated from Cayuga Community College and Cortland University. When I attended Cayuga Community College I took Radio and TV Production classes, where I learned the behind the scene stuff. After graduating, I attended Cortland University where my mentor Samuel L. Kelley casted me in lead role in The Prodical Son. I would say from that moment I wanted to be in front of the camera. I remember my little brother told me that this photoshop was doing free headshots. So we both went and got bunch headshots done for free. I used those headshots and sent them to multiple Agency and Casting calls. I ended up getting casted on Fuse tv pants off dance off and MTV Yo Momma. I always dreamt moving to California but really didn’t have a solid game plan how to get out there. I got casted on MTV Shot At Love With Tila Tequila. I was flown out to California to film the show. After the show wrapped I decided to stay in Los Angeles with just one bag of clothes. I left my apartment I shared with my brother and didn’t return to my job. The struggle was definitely real and I remember walking into ABC casting to get hired as background artist. A gentleman by the name of Theo Caesar. Said, ” You want to work? What’s your suit size and handed me one of his suits and said go to set right now.” A strong friendship was bonded with Mr. Caesar as help me with getting background work. I was later able to score an Agent and Jennifer Trendowski-Layton signed me. I went on to book multiple commercials for Coca-Cola, Nestle Quick, Walmart, Buffalo Wild Wings etc. as well TV Shows like Operation Repo, Rich Africans. While being on set I would take notes what Producer were doing. When Iver William Jallah moved his production company to LA. I helped cast for multiple of his projects. Roberto I was given the opportunity to not only Cast but to Produce it. It was very exciting to put all the elements together to see the overall success of the project.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I would like to say fair compensation. Pay artists fairly for their work, whether it’s in the form of wages, royalties, or resale rights.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
It would be personal fulfillment. Taking part in creative activities can provide a sense of accomplishment and personal fulfillment. Creating something from scratch can be deeply rewarding.
