Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nicki Slattery. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Nicki, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
Personally I’m glad I started my creative career exactly when I did.
My husband and I started a Metal Artistry business at the age of 27/28 (respectively) while I was going to school to get a Masters in Human Resource Management and he was a Sheet Metal Fabricator.
We built that business for 13 years before he went full time. I started building my Tarot & Astrology Consultantcy at age 39 and made the leap to go full time at 41.
Personally, I needed a strong financial foundation to ease my anxiety around us both becoming full time entrepreneurs.
We worked to become financially independent by 40; otherwise said, able to cover our base expenses before we took the plunge.
I love not having the pressure to ‘need to’ cover our base expenses with creative work. Rather, anything that comes in over base expenses affords us the luxuries we love.
Nicki, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have found Astrology & Tarot fascinating since I was a child, yet I never considered making a living from a creative endeavor.
It wasn’t until I started doing Art shows with my husband, selling direct to consumers, handling the finances and building small business strategies, did I consider starting my own creative career.
After 20+ years learning & practicing Astrology & Tarot with friends & family, I opened my own business offering clients intuitive guidance through challenging career and relationship problems.
What sets my intuitive coaching apart is that I combine 20 years of corporate project management skills, with 15 years of artistry business, a lifetime of psychic/intuitive skills and financial independence skills to help clients reach their goals.
My psychic/intuitive skills provide interpersonal understanding and karmic pattern recognition. The project management, artistry business and financial independence skills, ground the plan into action for change.
Recently, I started offering synastry chart evaluations; in which one partner’s Natal Astrological chart is analyzed with their partners. The insights I identify in analyzing couple charts helps them work better together, identify new goals and leverage each other’s strengths more effectively.
As an example, my husband and I are both Aries suns (classic entrepreneurs), yet through deeply evaluating our synastry chart aspects, I learned how to more effectively combine our creativity.
I bring stability and structure with a trine of my Saturn to his Venus. His Sun is conjunct with my Mars placement, therefore he teaches me to assert myself and take risks.
There are many other details I delve into with synastry charts. The magic of helping partners find the good in each other, accept differences and find each other’s strengths is what I LOVE.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
When I worked in a corporate career my primary goal was to have a positive impact on people and save as much money as possible to fund our ‘freedom fund’ for financial independence.
I held onto each of our dollars or ‘solidiers’ to be deployed into the S&P or NASDAQ for an average return of 10%.
As we built our creative business I had to ‘unlearn’ my commitment to investing in the market and learn how to let go of expectations of our own business investments.
I knew how to ride the rollercoaster of the market, but not the emotional rollercoaster of putting money into unknown Art Shows, Metaphysical events and advertising.
Sitting at an art booth or Metaphysical show, when it’s raining or ‘the game is on, so no one is out’ feels a lot different than a market downturn.
I had to learn how to trust my skill set, my ability to pivot to products people prefer and find my tribe.
I grew up with parents who had a ton of fear and scarcity around money. Effort was not put forth UNLESS you knew you were earning a degree or getting paid X dollars to do the task.
I remember being at home and my mom seeing my booth setup materials in my car for a metaphysical show and saying…wow…you left earning 6 figures for ‘this.’
Yes, I did…a degree, 10 years of experience in HR and a 6 figure income to own a Metaphysical Coaching Business and Metal Art business.
Alas every dollar I make in this business brings with it the fruit of my labor PLUS the joy of doing the task.
Without the joy of the task, the money was never worth it.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
As an Artist it’s seeing the customer’s joy when they find the right piece for their home or they start tearing up reading the description of our art.
As a Metaphysical practitioner it’s seeing the ‘a-ha’ moment when someone understands their subconscious mind obstacle, but also sees a way out.
Moreover, in using Tarot & Astrology it’s amazing to share insights with clients that surprise them in how ‘dead on’ they are about a current situation. It validates how connected we all are to the mysterious universal energy guiding us.
As a coach, I love when clients come to me months later saying they finally found the right partner. They started that business. They now understand how to work with their spouse and not get tremendously annoyed :)
