Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nicki Odom. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Nicki, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
My missions is to make every woman have faith and confidence in themselves, and inspire joy and positivity in everyday life. Through body positivity and at home DIYs, I aim to invoke a sense of “I got this” in every woman who is feeling down or who may just feel like she doesn’t have what it takes. Young women, busy moms, work from home moms, basically all women who feel like their lives are too busy to have that “Pinterest Perfect” party or wear that new trend on their bodies because they’re not a size 4 anymore. I grew up being a little bigger than most of my friends. I was one the cheerleading squad and my nickname was “Thunder Thighs’ and while everyone else thought it was funny and prominent, it truly made me think twice about how my body looked in my uniform and how my legs looked in jeans and dresses. I remember feeling like people were looking at that part of my body and laughing. I luckily grew out of that and realized that it didn’t matter what anyone else said, I was beautiful. When I got out of college is when I started my blog, which began from me flipping furniture and posting about the details of how I was turning trash into new, stylish pieces for my home. Because I was just out of college of course I did not have the means to purchase new furniture and make my home catalogue perfection, so I knew I could do it myself. My 9-5 was managing a very well known, world wide, lingerie retailer, and body image was shoved in my face everyday. Despite having those “perfect bodies” displayed all around me almost everyday for 8 years, I kept preaching about size not being an issue, and hoping to spread the body confidence to all women who feel the weight of the media pushing down daily to look a certain way.
Now that I have two daughters of my own, I am more passionate than ever to talk daily about self love, and taking projects into your own hands, at home or during craft time. Being creative is such a great way to release tension and I share easy DIYs for parties and seasonal decor that anyone can do at home with a little time and passion. I also inspire women to live in their true style by sharing mid size/curvy fashion finds that are affordable and trendy, and how they can be worn multiple ways to make the pieces go farther for your dollar! It has been an amazing road and I feel like it is just getting started!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I started The Boho Diaries with the intention to inspire others to embrace their beauty as they are, and find their confidence through positive body images, taking on do it yourself projects in your home or crafts, to build the life you deserve one day at a time. When I came out of college and realized there aren’t high paying jobs just out there waiting for me, I could not afford to have the “Pinterest Perfect” house by running to Pottery Barn everytime some new trend came out. So I would make them myself. College also makes you realize as an adult, just how easy weight gain can be, especially after having children, and instead of feeling so down on how much my body changed throughout the years, I have recentered my focus to honoring my body and all that is has done for me. Everyday I choose to love different parts of myself and make healthy choices. If my followers can take away anything from my blog and social channels it would be ideas and inspiration on how to take on their own easy DIYs at home, as well as ways to embrace their perfect bodies (no matter their size) through curvy fashion finds and body confidence tips. I also share fun motherhood moments as a girl mom of two under 4, and the life of a crazy busy mom who still feels like she is 16 on this inside.:)
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to show other women and my daughters that women have the brains, power, strength, and ability to anything they put their mind to. Independence is in all of us if we choose to work hard and embrace who we truly are, know what we want, and never stop going after it.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I had found the mentors I have now earlier in my career of blogging and influencing. I only just started taking a few courses and truly connect with other peers who have been in this industry longer than I have, and it has changed my business immensely. Find mentors that inspire you and figure out a way to connect with them and have that mentorship.
